I'd be on Amazon in 2 seconds ordering a Paperwhite and it'd be at my door in 2 days. I'd survive for 2 days without a book. If I REALLY needed a new reader RIGHT NOW I'd go to Barnes and Noble and get a new Glowlight and be reading in an hour.

It doesn't seem like a good idea to keep around a device you won't use, particularly as batteries tend to go bad. Kindle cloud reader will allow you to use your book in a web browser on a chromebook until a new one arrives.
I've had the same thoughts regarding a backup reader. If I really need a reader NOW, I can always hop over the border and I'll have a new KPW2 within a few hours. Also, you're right regarding the batteries. They are all Li-Ion, probably, and thus deteriorate as soon as they leave the factory. You might find your reader unusable at the time you need it, having to wait (and maybe, hunt) for a replacement battery. Then what's the point of a backup?

I'm only going to think about backups now if e-Ink readers are disappearing while an alternative that can be read in full sunlight is not available.

I concur on the battery thing. I still have my deck of old Kindles for testing purposes, and nearly each time, each testing session begins by waiting an afternoon (and finding enough free wall outlets...) for everything to be charged... ^^.

Exactly. If that were to happen, I would buy a second and stow it away. I have enough mechanical know-how that if I needed to, I could open the thing up and replace the battery when it deteriorates from lack of use.

The ereader itself is just a medium to read the books. More important is making backups of the books themselves. I've got all of my books backed up in multiple formats on HDD and in the cloud. If my Nook broke, I could read my books on any internet connected device.

I know it's a controversial topic, but if you're worried about backing up your reading experience, the material itself what you should be focusing on.

I agree. As I've mentioned before, I find Kindles in pawn shops for $5 or $10, there's no reason at all not to have backup(s) -- at least in this area. The K4 was the first Kindle I really "took to," and it probably still my most used Kindle. (Though, translate and some of the other features in the Touch are starting to win out.)

I've got a Nook simple touch and of course my iPads and Galaxy note 3 that I could read on if anything happened to my paperwhite. I have the extended warranty on my paperwhite anyway so it would get replaced in a few days.

In the Dallas/Fort Worth area of Texas. There are several pawn shops around here (Mid cites, north of Fort Worth) that sell Nooks and Kindles for about $30 or $25, but there's one specific one that (on one visit) sold three Kindle Keyboards at $10 each (one couldn't be registered, all had 3G, the two that could be registered, without ads) and -- later, two Kindle 4s (silver Basics in very good condition) and a Kindle Touch 3G with a spot in the screen and some scratches on the bezel, for $5 each. They were on "clearance" because "they didn't have chargers, weren't color and they couldn't be used to browse the web." Last time I was in they had a Nook Simple Touch for $25 -- and the guy told me to make an offer when I was looking at it. But I left that one and I'm kind of avoiding the store, so I don't get tempted to buy more. They're also sold on Craigslist around here -- often for $20 or $25. My brother picked up a WiFi Touch (in OEM lighted Kindle case) for his wife, for $40.

It's also a matter of having extra ones around to hand off to a friend or family member. Three of the ones that I've found have gone to family members (father, brother and son).

When you think about it, these readers will become the Mr. Cofffee's and CD players of 21st century.

Remember in 1984, when CD players were heavy as hell and made mostly of metal parts? They were typically priced at close to $1000.

And remember when the automatic coffee machines were very expensive? It's now easier to just throw them away and buy a new one. (Or ship the damaged ones to a third world country.)

I predict ebook Readers will be like Mp3 players: cheap as all get-out and as abundant as lint in a belly button. (This is already happening with tablets.)

So: just buy them for a few bucks and donate them to the nearest literacy program. Or to a nephew or cousin.

I use all of mine, I don't store them away as a "backup."

Dr. D I just love the Sandisk Clip Zip and I usually get them for around $20. Awesome mp3 player!

Right now I've got them stacked up on my desk and I charge them every now and then and read a part of a book on one of them. I kind of shuffle them around so they all get some use. But I see this as a temporary deal. If I can't find family members who want them, I'll probably sell them on Craigslist or eBay. I'm always going to have at least one Nook, and one Kindle and I've gotten fond of the Sony T2 -- even though I didn't like some of its quirks when I first bought it.

I agree. I don't know if there is a literacy program that collects eReaders nearby, but that might not be a bad idea. There are a lot of eReaders just sitting around. They should somehow be gotten into the hands of those who would use them.

I have 5 Kindles at present, 4 Keyboard and 1 Kindle 4. I just gave away a Kindle 2 and a Kindle Keyboard with a Sony touchscreen screen installed (it works, but it's kind reading on a foggy day). Most were given to me broken, and I replaced motherboards or screens in them. I keep one for my son (he never borrows it) and one for my wife (on vacation she uses it). The Kindle 4 I bought on sale for $49. I stick it in my pocket whenever I go out. I take the KKeyboard when I travel for the 3G. In fact, I was in a taxi on the way to CDG airport in Paris a couple of weeks back, and the driver didn't know what terminal my airline used. It wasn't on my e-ticket, either. If you go to the wrong terminal at CDG, you are pretty buggered. I turned on my Kindle, experimental browser, Googled CDG AirTransat, and Bob's your uncle. I had it in minutes. Since I don't have a cell phone or tablet, I have made use of the Kindle 3G several times for such things. And, of course, for downloading books and newspapers. There was absolutely no coverage in France of the Stanley Cup playoffs, so my Kindle NYTimes was great.

But all of that is entirely off-topic. I do keep a backup charged. And I have brought a backup when I travel. By the way, I went to France with my Kindle 3 fully charged, but brought the wrong voltage adapter. No problem. The charge was good for hours of reading on my flights and on 7 hours of train travel to/from Geneva. I still had some juice when I arrived home. Try that with your tablet, mofo!

I know. I have both Kobo touch and Glo. I use touch on subway and glo at home. but I see it as temporary as well. But my touch is 2 years old, so debating whether I should sell Glo. I can sell touch too,but cosmetic condition is not good,so doubt can sell it. debating
