So I'm seeing the full credit now, and it may have been there sooner, I believe I was looking for it incorrectly.

Earlier I was going to this page and looking at the "Software / Video Games" section, which is still showing $5. But the correct place to look is elsewhere (it's actually on every paid app page), see this page for details. When I look that way, I now have all $8 in credit.

I suspect what is going on here is that the $5 credit from buying the game can be used either for the AppStore, or Amazon's digital software store. While the $3 credit is solely for the AppStore.

Hopefully this helps others checking their balance.

Click on the link for applying a promo code on any app's page. It shows up there, instead of as coins.

I used the Google version on my Nexus 4 without any problems.

I tried my Nexus 5 and Nexus 7 using the Google Play version. I tap on the get your free credit in Shazam and another window pops up and I tap on the get free credit button. It seems to be temperamental - I used Dolphin and Chrome Browsers a few times and it only took me to the Amazon mp3 store. Finally tried again using Chrome on my Nexus 7 and it worked - it brought up a sign in screen. I feel like I should have earned more than $1.29.

Sorry for the delay in responding - I didn't see your post until now.

It is possible, but you run the risk of Amazon cancelling your account for abuse if you do it too frequently or too soon after earning the coins. YMMV

When I "buy a free app" to earn coins, I just have it delivered to the cloud instead of my device. This way I am not returning anything but the software I don't really want is not taking up space on my HDX.

I do the same. Most of the free apps aren't worth using.

I got an E-mail from Amazon yesterday telling me they had given me 300 coins for viewing the children's literature thing earlier. That was very much longer than 48 hours, but my coins balance has finally gone up. Might want to check your E-mail/coin balance to see if you got the coins as well.
