I was thinking that the first Avis credit expired at the end of this month.

In case anyone has as poor a memory as me (not likely), I went back in the archives to check. The offer ended April 27, it is/was good for 60 days; therefore, the offer ends (without getting a calendar and counting the days (and forgetting whether or not April had 30 days or 31 days and June has 30 days or 31 days (I never committed to memory that song about the number of days in each month arrggghh))) on or about June 26.

So . . . those of us with the credit have about another month to decide upon what to spend it.

This is not the proper thread for a discussion of this, I know, so I wish to keep the discussion, if there is any, brief.

Does anyone know of a place on Amazon's website where they inform people what books are in the queue to be Whispersync'd?

For example, there is a Kindle non-fiction book marked down now to $1.99 called Rites of Spring (on World War I and its aftermath), by Modris Eksteins. It's rated 4 1/2 stars, over lots of reviews. I'd love to have an audiobook version, especially since the text version is 420 pages. Sometimes it's a good deal to buy a Kindle book that's greatly marked down, and get the Whispersync version to go with it--you can get the Kindle book and the audio book for less than the regular cost of the audio by itself--but there is no Whispersync version to this book (in fact, right now there is not even an Audible version showing).

I'm tempted to buy the Kindle on speculation that a Whispersync version will be forthcoming, but I'm not a gambler by nature. But, if a Whispersync version does come out for the book, the Kindle version then may be very expensive (the digital list price on it now is $14.99), and then I've got to buy the Whispersync, which while being cheaper than the full price for the Audible version, is still a cost nevertheless. I could wait and buy an audio download or CD, but that might be quite a bit more expensive than taking the marked-down-Kindle + Whispersync route. And what if an audio version never comes out? Well, if I don't buy this $1.99 Kindle version, I've missed maybe my only chance to get the book in one format, at least, for a great price.

Do you see the conundrum? And do you see why it would be great to know what books that Amazon is planning to Audiblize (a new word that I coined. haha)? If I knew that Amazon was going to have a Whispersync version of this book that I'm interested in, I would buy it now and just wait for the Whispersync to come out, assuming that it would be the cheaper way to go and also having the benefits of the syncing.

Throughout my schooling, I remember teachers telling us to ask questions because there "are probably others who are wondering the same thing." Maybe that's true with this. At least, I think that if we knew of a place where Amazon gave its future Whispersyncing plans, it would be helpful to all of us whether or not we had thought of it before or not.

There is no list that will tell you what's in the works. For the specific title you mention (& most books) there are a lot of things in play. Do the audio rights rest with the publisher or were they retained by the author? Either way first either the publishers audio division (if they have one) or another audio publisher like Books on Tape, Recorded books, Tantor, Brilliance, Audible Studios, etc. have to acquire the rights and then decide to produce the audio book Audible won't generally know about it until the audiobook is being solicited by the publisher. Once the book is produced it would be made available for sale at Audible and other retailers (Audible generally gets most audiobooks as do other download sellers), but it's up to the company that produced it as to if it will be eligible for Whispersync for Voice (at least that's what authors I've talked to have said). Of course even if it becomes a Whispersync title it might not be cheap. Some WS titles are heavily discounted while others aren't (& prices can fluctuate) so even if it's a WS title it might or might not work out to be the cheapest way to get the audiobook.

Generally older titles like that are even harder to guess on as to if/when they'll become audiobooks. The one thing that title currently has going for it is the WWI anniversary, but newly produced books generally have priority.
