You don't have to deal with a "monopoly", and you're not going to do so in the foreseeable future.

Can someone help me choose from the confusing number of other places I can preorder Hachette titles from? I'm tired of paying the only-game-in-town.

Google Play also. They use Adobe's DRM, and you can download either epub or pdf from the Google Play website or read the book on an android device.

Caveat: I haven't tried this yet since the book I'm ordering isn't out yet. I just tried to do my research first. I did verify that I can download a freebie title from the website.

eBooks.com also has some Hachette preorders. OmniLit sells Hachette, but I don't think they do pre-orders.

I've bought from Google and downloaded too, but I do worry about ADE 3.0 preventing me from reading on other devices at some time in the future. Google just needs to update their own app to be compatible. If I remember correctly the new drm is set on your first download - does downloading to your tablet count? Is 3.0 still coming?

This wouldn't be a problem if publishers did the smart thing and did away with drm as suggested in the Smashwords article by Mark Coker a few pages back.

For shame!

DiapDealer is a simple man, who just wants guidance in the confusing sea of choices, and all you do is offer more!

@DiapDealer,

Clearly you should be supporting B&N. It's that simple.

I mean, come on! They have:
  • The best hardware offering
  • The best software offering
  • The best customer service offering
  • The best guarantee that they will continue to exist and sell you books
  • They are genuinely interested in culture, not money-grubbers like Amazon
  • They always play nice with everyone

Oh, and if Target is in the game, can Walmart be far behind?

While it's great to see Target doing something with ebooks. I don't believe this partnership with Librify will worry Amazon (or anyone else) very much. According to the USA Today article [bold mine]:
http://www.usatoday.com/story/money/...brify/9480717/

Quote:
The service will be targeted at women, especially young professionals and moms of the coveted Millennial generation. Target is vague on the details at this point, saying more will be revealed this summer. But Stone Herman says there will be promotions and discounts for Target shoppers who arrive at librify.com through Target's website, and in-store displays will promote the partnership.

"It is a great solution for bringing a digital book experience to the Target guests who have long enjoyed our "Club Picks" selections," Target spokeswoman Erica Julkowski says. "We are proud to partner with Librify to offer a differentiated experience, which focuses on social connectivity and book clubs."

Target employees choose a new "club pick" every month based on what they personally are reading. Stone Herman says Librify will be able to leverage this curation expertise and capitalize on Target's brand.
It sounds like the new service just converts their print "club pick" to a digital one as selected by Target employees. This is similar to every other book club in the country.

I know ... right?

How on earth am I supposed to get out from underneath the boot-heel of an oppressive and evil monopoly when it has so many strictly-in-it-for-the-literature competitors that I can't decide which one to give my future business to? I'm conflicted.
