Some codes are issued over twitter or other social media in Japan, or by email to subscribers to Kobo newsletters.

The recent big lists of large codes were from a competition. There will probably be another competition next month

Please everyone check your credit card information! I just got off the phone with Kobo after finding over $83 worth of charges to my credit card that I did not make. He told me they had an issue with billing. A really big issue seeing as it is a credit card I no longer have on file with them (I removed it some months ago)!

Oh? I used it just now too, and it's a 40% discount for me. I bought a $3.49 book, and after discount it's $2.09.

How odd that it's different by store!?
One of the ones I tried was RS637.49 - after code was applied, RS446.24

Not a big deal, just interesting to know.
