Lets just hope your cute dogs don't decide to have a sniffing contest.

Do you know if they are good with kids (their temperment guide says yes but frist hand is best)? Wife and I want another dog but were concerned about socialization with with our grand kids who live 4+ hours away and would only see the dog once a month.

Yes they are good with kids, we have kids in all ages from 18 and down to 2 in the family, no problem whatsoever. The dogs adore the kids.

And when we are on the breed-meets here in stockholm there can be 50+ Bernese dogs of all ages, males and females. And there hasn't been a single fight in the year and a half we have attended And there are kids along that run around, petting all the dogs, hanging on them and just generally being a nuisance (like kids do) and not a single one of the dogs have ever shown a tendancy to even get irritated.

The bond that develops between a Bernese and kids is usually described as "Magic", the only issue we ever noticed is that they tend to "guard" the kids a bit much. For instance, our older dog got a bit upset with my wifes daughter when she grabbed one of her kids and started yelling at him for doing something stupid. Not that Leo did anything, but you could see him tense up and go into "protective mode".
