I'm currently reading Fallen by Karin Slaughter.

I've been reading a lot of British detectives this year and Karin Slaughter is a nice diversion, it's grittier and bleaker than many British books I've been reading.

Read Peter Robinson's Inspector Banks Series up through Piece of My Heart. Highly recommended series.
I just finished the new Longmire book by Craig Johnson Any Other Name. I enjoyed it immensely, especially the humor.
Now I am currently trying to decide my next read.

Fantastic!! I really enjoyed The Mysterious Affair at Styles. I believe that I'll be reading more of these in the order that Goodreads has them labled. I'd previously read the 4 Agatha Christie books that I'd seen as movies, 3 Poirot books, Death on the Nile (1978), Murder on the Orient Express (2010), Evil Under the Sun (1982) and a free-standing one called And Then There Were None (1945).

Next I'll read the 5 chapters of Skin Game (The Dresden Files #15) by Jim Butcher that have been posted on jim-butcher.com. Then I'll continue the book after the next-week release on Tuesday, May 27th!

The one thing I did like about the John Ringo book is his sense of humour. Which one doesn't much get from David Drake. OTOH, with Eric involved in the book, it will at least be structurally sound.

Nice to have the plot advancing again. Looking good so far.
It was pretty good, but didn't really grab me. Still enjoyable, but not un-put-downable.

Now for the latest issue of Analog SFF - the July/August double issue.

I just finished "The Battle of Bretton Woods:John Maynard Keynes, Harry Dexter White, and the Making of a New World Order" by Ben Steil, one of the 2014 Lionel Gelber Prize shortlist books. A dry read, but rewarding in its discussion of the exchanges between Britain and the US during WW2 over the postwar monetary system.

"And now for something completely different..."

I'm always on the lookout for new authors so over the last month I've read a variety of first books of mystery series, starting with The Water Rat of Wanchai by Ian Hamilton. This one needed some editing and proofreading, there were many errors of timing and I found that distracting. I also thought the story was predictable and the protagonist was not believable.

Then I tried The Three Evangelists by French author Fred Vargas. The plot didn't hold together and the characters were lifeless, this series is not for me.

Next was The Kill Artist by Daniel Silva. I'm sure I've read some of this series, but I hadn't read this first one. It was a bit simplistic and I didn't find much to draw me into the characters, so another pass.

After all these flops and to celebrate the start of the golf season, I lightened things up with Carl Hiassen's The Downhill Lie, chronicling his attempt to take up golf again in middle age. Funny and scathing and true. Of course, my handicap is ten lower than his, so I couldn't relate to his struggles. Ok, I'm lying, every golfer can relate.

Fortunately, I've been enjoying listening to Adrian McKinty's Michael Forsythe "Dead" series, I've finished the first two of this trilogy. It's not quite up to the standard of his more recent "Troubles" trilogy, but still very good.

On the drive to the cabin I listened to Paper Towns by John Green. Both my husband and I enjoyed it, Green captures teenagers' struggles wonderfully without unnecessary angst. I'll snag more of his stuff when I see it on sale.

I'm halfway through the seventh in Deborah Crombie's Kincaid/James British police mystery series and still enjoying this series very much.

The latest Bruno, Chief of Police novel, Children of Men by Martin Walker, has been released so that's next up and it's time to mix in some non-fiction so I'll start listening to The Emperor of All Maladies by Siddhartha Mukherjee shortly.

Currently reading Norwegian by Night by Derek B. Miller. It was listed as one of the best of 2013 by The Economist, and the premise intrigued me. I'm not normally into thrillers, but this one is so far just excellent!

Combines several of my favorite themes: being a foreigner in a strange country, an older hero (82), culture conflicts, generational differences, language difficulties, with a soupçon of political intrigue from the Korean War to Vietnam and the war in the Balkans. Oh, and it takes place in Norway - which is a place I visited on and off for a short while.

I finished the available 5 chapters of Skin Game - LOVED IT!

While waiting for Skin Game's imminent release I've begun reading Savage Run (Joe Pickett #2) by C.J. Box.
Quote:
In Savage Run--C.J. Box's acclaimed follow-up to his career-making debut Open Season--game warden Joe Pickett looks into the bizarre death of an environmental activist...and what he finds is bigger and far more sinister than anything he imagined.

Well, that picked up! Still not as a fun as a good Ringo, but definitely enough to get me to read the next.

The Beliarius books were plotted by Drake and written by Flint.

Yeah, as I read further into it, I definitely got the feeling that Eric was writing it. Well, I'm going to jump on the next in the series, In the Heart of Darkness and see how it goes.

I've enjoyed this book very much.
Now to leave thrillers and mysteries behind for a while, I've started Pivot Point by Kasie West. This is a YA book that seems to promise heaps of cuteness.

You'll probably enjoy it. Mystery is my favorite genre and I've read a lot. I was impressed with Rowling's mastery of the genre and the quality of the writing. I had thought of her as a children's writer. Now her books, as long as they are mysteries, will be auto-buys for me.
