Removing Special Offers ?

this is the first time i'm writing this. I hope i can do this more often.

Amazon just removed special offers from my kindle, for FREE, after i requested it,
saying how useless it is me and Amazon becose i have the store locked.
(In a much nicer way and making sure to say Amazon and Kindle many times)

my kindle works much faster now.
amazon also told me in the email that whan viewing my email (??) he noticed that i had a problem with unsupported file types (JB?) and reminded me what file types i can sideload on to my kindle.

What do you mean when you say that "you have the store locked"?

Removing Special Offers should make absolutely no difference whatsoever to the speed of the Kindle. How could it?

1. parental controls.
2. dont ask me ask amazon. also it reminded Amazon that they didint update my kindle since 5.4.2.1 now i got 5.4.3.2 (that was after i posted about the speed).

There's no difference in the firmware between a Kindle with and without special offers. The act of disabling (or enabling) special offers CAN make no speed difference. That's a simple fact, not a matter of opinion .

maybe your right but the last statement you said isn't true a empty kindle is faster then one full with book's (even after indexing).

special offers need to be updated evry day.

I can honestly say that my Kindle, which now has close to 1000 books on it, is not slower than when it was empty, when it comes to actually reading books. The only thing that slows down with additional content is global searching. Nothing else (that I can think of, anyway) is slower.

Actually it only checks once every few days. I have a Kindle Touch with SO, and the offers VERY rarely update. It's certainly not as if SO mean a constant stream of communication between the Kindle and Amazon (and, of course, if you leave WiFi disabled, it does nothing at all).

Or just jailbreak, install a terminal emulator and run the shutdown command. If it's really that important to you.

Kindle uses a type of flash memory, not regular HD. Flash memory becomes slower after a lot of writes (updates) as the main storage unit, called block, needs to be totally erased (change bits back to 1) I see that as rare case on a Kindle, unless you add many, many books and hit almost 90% or more of Kindle's capacity , delete again, and re-add books. That action of adding, deleting, adding, deleting, kind of burn the cells and over the time, decreases performance of a flash storage.

So technically speaking, at least in terms of actual reading, an empty Kindle must be as fast as a non empty Kindle.

And this is true on most flash storage devices, unless you use an eMLC , which I don't think any consumer product uses anyway, including IPads, due higher cost.

Buy and read Nigel Poulton book, Data Storage Networking ;-) it's explained very well there. You can read it on your own Kindle, by the way.

FLASH memory cell degradation with use affects reliability, not response time. Any application level slowdown is due to filesystem fragmentation or poorly thought out indexing schemes. If you want the truth, straight from the horse's mouth, look at the technical briefs and application notes on various FLASH memory manufacturers websites.

Amazon claim you can turn an eInk kindle off by holding the power button for up to eight seconds depending on model. From personal experience, a K3 that has been shut down that way, cold boots when next activated, and if it is left unused, the battery seems to retain its charge for longer.

If you're referring to my post, you misunderstood it, or you need to go back and read it again.

I'm not talking about reliability, which is related, but performance.

Writes are done as per blocks basis on flash storage, not cell. So if you need to write a partially filled block , the system has to erase all cells on that block via programming and that operation takes time (single cells cannot be erased independently). That only happens when the storage (available blocks) is getting full or you're running out of free blocks, which is thousands of ebooks on a Kindle, depending of ebook size.

Also, because there are no mechanical parts on flash storage, fragmentation, while exists, is negligible. That's why you should never defrag Windows if it's running on a SSD drive, besides it reduces the drive's life.

I've own like 4 different Kindles in my life, except 1st gen. None of them have shown any reduction in reading speed over the time. This is because filling the Kindle with books and keeping those there mainly requires reading activities, not a full reprogramming of a whole block and reading is fast on a flash storage.
