I'm curious and wonder if you know the answer. Most applications that I update on my Nexus 7 remain in the folder which I have placed them. But some applications, CC and Plex most recently, virtually always removes itself from its folder. This means when I go to open CC its icon is missing and I have to place CC back in its proper location in a folder on the home page.

This isn't major, I was just wondering why this happens to only some apps that get updated.

I have also noticed this behavior on my Nexus. I suspect it has something to do with KitKat.

I have seen this on my 4.3 and 4.4 devices (Galaxy Nexus and original N7). It seems to happen to Moon+ every third or fourth update (and it updates a lot). I have seen it happen to CC, a calendar app I use (Pimlical), the local transport app (RATP), and a few others. I have never seen it happen to a Google app, but then I don't keep many of those front and center.

I asked the Oracle of Google and found that the problem has been reported since 2012. Various theories have been advanced and I found one bug report filed with Google. Google has had nothing to say that I could find.

Several people theorized that it happens when the application "manifest" changes. The manifest describes all the external interfaces an app has. It also describes the version number and release number, which means that it must change on every update, so if the manifest is related it isn't as simple as a change.

And it is annoying. I noticed a hole in my apps panel, and it took me several minutes to remember what I had there so I could put it back. Sigh...

I've never had this happen to me. I think it's only if you use the default Google launcher. I use Nova launcher.

The performance improvement when scanning for missing books is incredible! I have 832 books and it took less than two seconds! It was so quick It startled me when the missing books popped up.

Thank you for the detailed response. For me. trying to recollect what's missing is the most annoying aspect of this bug.
