Huh, what? iPhone cables? Doesn't the iPhone have a normal 3.5mm jack? Come on.... I stuck those Shures in loads of devices, but never in an iPhone. I'll check it with a colleague's pbone later today.

Yes, the iPhone has a standard headphone jack. I've used all sorts of different headphones with mine.

So, what's that stuff about iPhone cables for those Shures? Did they specifically construct the plug in such a way that it doesn't fit an iPhone? Seems strange to me.

They fit with difficulty in my Nexus 4, but that's because of the TPU back case. Without the case, they fit like they should.

The regular headphones work as headphones. The cable turns it into a headset with a mic and remote controls for skip, pause, ff/rw etc.

I assume it'll be a standard 3.5mm jack with a triple contact but the actual commands sent down the wire will be Apple specific.

Oh, that one. Forgot about it. Previously, Shure in-ears came with a very short 1 foot cable, and a 4 foot extension cable. You could replace the extension with a longer or shorter one, or one with extra controls.

It seems they now have it complete cable now, for the newer xx5 series.

Ohhh, you are getting my all exited. I need to check these out. Not so much for sleeping, but I might be able to do audio books then at night. But I have been for years trying to find ear phones I can use. My ears are very sensitive. Every ear bud I have every tried hurts so bad. Any size, doesn't matter. I have tried over the ears but I also wear glasses and they often put too much pressure on the arm behind the ear. Plastic on plastic I guess. I have tried them all. I literally have a grave yard of ear buds/headphones in a box.

These look like I could wear them any time really I need them. I have used headbands over my glasses, so I am thinking that would work fine. But mostly, it won't hurt my ears anymore.

Use an in-ear instead of earbuds. No earbuds fit me; my ears are too small. Even with my Shure in-ears I use the smallest foam tips.

Aren't the ones that stick into the ear also called ear buds, as well as the ones with the disks that just sort of hang on the outside?
It would seem that many manufactures, as well as vendors, use the terms interchangeably:

Anything that touches on the inside of my year hurts. I call them all ear buds if they don't go on or over the ear. And I just looked at some "in ear" and they look the same than ear buds. So they are the same? I don't see a difference.

I even tried some sony ones that are over the head and then have a bud tip thingy, no clue what they are called, they just kind of lean inside the ear, rather than the bud holding them in. Same thing, they hurt.

No, they're not the same, but many people use the terms earbud and in-ear interchangeably.

Earbud: a disc that 'clips' into your ear, using the ear's nooks and crannies to hang in there. These don't provide any sealing, and you'll hear everything around you and others will hear your music.

(I *hate* these. They are always too big, never stay put, and they hurt my ears. I never try them and put them away with the packaging, so I have them should I want to sell the device they came with.)

In-Ear: It literally sits *IN* your ear; you shove it into the hearing canal. If you have a high(er)-end model such as the Shures (and many others), which come with many different sealing tips, you can create a seal that is so good you'll hear nothing but your music, and nobody can hear what you are listening to.

(I *love* these. I have 12 pairs of spare tips for my Shure's, and I'll buy some more later on. That's the only downside; the tips need to be cleaned, and thus wear down.)

Tried both kinds. They both hurt. I tried all kinds of sized on the in ear, pain. Just pain. Pressure and pain.
I also have a few of the disks the buds. Those are horrible. Even more pain. I can't get them to even stay on my ear. I think my space is limited in that area.

But yeah, tried all of these. No can do.

I don't like in-ear headphones either, they hurt my poor delicate ear holes. I purchased these Philips SHS8100/98 Earhook Headphones a couple of years ago:

The over the ear holders keep the things from falling off, and keep you from needing to jam anything into the ear. The sound quality is fine, nothing to get overly excited about, but they are the best phones I've tried for my ears. They're reasonably priced at $30. I also have a pair of Shures and a pair of Ultimate Ears that have great sound, but hurt to much to wear, and inevitably fall out of my ears.

Hm. My Shures are over the ear as well, with a wire in the cable to keep the correct form.

It's the one thing I don't really like because I wear glasses.
