Only exceptions to the curfew will be people going to or from the airports, hospitals, and night workers. Cinemas, bars, and restaurants, malls, etc. will all close earlier. All the Thai TV and Radio stations are shut down, and it's expected that the internet may get suspended shortly.

I'm curious to see just what effect this will have here in Chiang Mai. I knew the Coup was coming as soon as Martial Law was declared, but the martial aspects only affected Bangkok despite being issued for all of the Kingdom. If the last Coup was any indication, there really will be little disruption up here, and even not to much in Bangkok other than what the curfew brings. Right now there is plenty of traffic on the street outsid, but it's only 9:50

Stitch: Agreed, there was never much doubt where this was going, given Thailand's history. Stay safe, and I hope all the issues stay south of you. If we don't see you for a while, I'll assume they killed the local Internet access.

Bags are always ready, but I doubt we'll need them. There is a coup here every couple of years. It's always just about bloodless, more in name than in actual political change, and usually doesn't have any effect on our daily lives. I was living in Chiang Mai during the coup of 2006, and other than seeing a couple of soldiers sitting in the shade, you'd never know anything was going on. It's a time to take selfies with the soldiers...

Oh no. The Royal Family is still an honored position, recognized by both political factions and absolutely loved by the general population. They have nothing to do with politics though.

Today's rant: Those piece of crap race car shopping carts and the people who use them. There's no room in the typical grocery store for these oversized monstrosities. They won't stack with the other carts, they're always blocking at least one of the lanes for returning shopping carts, and making room for them in the stores and the charming little rugrats they house is a constant PITA. It's difficult enough navigating around all the people who leave their carts angled to block whole aisles, or who have stopped mid-aisle to have an impromptu family-reunion or get-together with friends, or who are paying more attention to their friend on the other end of their cell-phone than they are their surroundings, without having to contend with these brontosaurus wannabes. You have to be crazy to attempt driving an 18-wheeler down Lombard Street, and someone who is in less than complete control of their faculties to drive one of those souped-up baby carriages through a grocery store. I hate them, and if you use them, I hate you and your self-absorbed offspring.

Well, not really hate. But I won't be getting you any Christmas presents.

If those are photos of the actual carts that caused you to "Vent and Rant," don't come up here. The ones we have are much longer.

But I do almost all my grocery shopping between 10PM and midnight, so I don't see many little kids in the store. (And there are far fewer of their parents' SUVs trying to out-navigate me in the parking lot.)

Ditto here. The ones in our local stores are monstrosities compared to those.

It's my least-favorite thing, shopping for groceries, mostly for the reasons listed by W.T. It boggles me that people can be so self-absorbed that they can't notice that someone else is WAITING, stuck behind them, to get past (and agree: the cellphone yakkers are the WORST).

Things here, but it's not that bad. When the store is horribly crowded I just leave my cart at the end of the aisle and go get what I need. After having experienced commisaries overseas, I rarely have anything To complain about. I avoid day before thanksgiving shipping like the plague and other than that it's great!

For what it's worth, the sports car carts in our area are larger also. Those three pictures were graphics I grabbed off a Google search to let you all know what I was speaking of.

I admit, I'll call the house to check on something, e.g., do we have X, or need X, or, I just remembered we MIGHT need X, and can the Hub check...that type of thing...but it's 30 seconds, or however long it takes him to check. I can't even imagine "gabbery" on a phone in a grocery store. It's already bloody noisy, between the ruddy air-conditioning at full-blast, screaming kids, speakers booming specials and the like.

I agree; I've often been in the store and seen a item that made me place a quick call to the wife to ask if we're low on a certain item, or to say that I just saw something she might like and should I buy it while I'm out. These aren't the cell phone users who get under my skin. The ones who bug me are those who have a phone glued to their heads at all times, who always enter rooms with one hand to their ear, and who are yakking on their phone from the time they enter the parking lot until they load their purchases in their trunks. Is this why the early pioneers of quantum mechanics struggled so hard to come up with a workable theory? Just so idiots could talk to other idiots on cell phones all day long?

Our local Food Lion has double wide "rocket ship" carts ....

My rant - my next door neighbor has obviously decided to spend daily 'quality time' outdoors with her young daughter. Problem? She's on her cell phone the entire time - talking & shrieking with laughter so loudly we can't sit on our deck and hear each other speak. Last night even her husband shouted out the front door "What are you doing out there?" - unfortunately she kept right on yakking. Her kid must really be benefitting from these one-on-one sessions with mom.

I'm beginning to fantasize about putting a sprinkler in the bushes between our houses .... one of those wide perforated bars that waves back & forth ....
