I'm still ploughing through Passage to India - first time a book that length has taken this long It has it's moments - both in terms of character interest and historical interest, but for a lot of the time I'm torn between wanting to slap some sense into half the characters, or go back in time and ask the author to stop labouring over the some of the points being made - I got it the first time, and the second, and the sixth.

I'm interspersing that with reading through a stack of magazines.

I'm having a hard time reading it. The characters seem so emo.

I am now going to have a hard time reading it without picturing all the characters with lopsided fringes and so on. Which may improve things a bit...

Since it turns out some of us don't really care too much for this book, can we move to a different book for the book club please?

The most action so far has been a car accident and they sat around debating what animal it was they hit. I don't get why these people are not in comas.

I'm about a quarter way through 'A Passage to India', and I'm enjoying it so far.

Only I didn't like the ebook version I bought from Fictionwise (no right justification, typos), so I'm reading a pbook version I got from the library.

Just finished the second 'Dexter' book by Jeff Lindsay. I didn't like it as much as the first one. Dexter's fondness for referring to himself int he third person using clever alliterative puns started to get annoying, and I did not have as much sympathy for his 'oh, I want to go kill someone right now but alas I cannot' shtick.

Am about to start Gaiman's newest, The Graveyard Book.

Dana Stabenow's Kate Shugak series here. Love it, too. Reminds me of my times in Northern Canada. Have a look at www.stabenow.com.

I'm reading Death in Winter, as per JSWolf's recommendation. I'm afraid that I am almost done.

Ok, I'm onto Before Dishonor now... It's too bad we couldn't meet up while I was in Billerica for six years, JSWolf! I had a client in Roslindale. So, I know from where you hail.

Reading a number of journal articles about field-dependence/field-independence. At least I can get electronic versions.

Then I'm going to be reading Blink: The Power of Thinking Without Thinking by Malcolm Gladwell, and then I'll probably read Gut Feelings: The Intelligence of the Unconscious by Gerd Gigerenzer (neither in ebook form, unfortunately). Meanwhile I'm also reading several texts about analytical and critical thinking. Anyone want to guess what I'm writing my next paper about?

I enjoyed 'Blink' a lot. Gladwell's previous work, 'Tipping Point' *is* available as an e-book as far as I know and is even better, IMHO.

As a "sticky", please can we try to keep this thread on topic - ie what we're reading now. The Lounge is the place for the more general chat.

Thanks,

I'm currently re-reading Hegel's Phenomenology, as preparation for a lecture.

For pleasure, I'm re-reading John Dickson Carr's "The Hollow Man " (published in the USA as "The Three Coffins"). There is nothing quite like a good locked-room mystery, and this is from a master of the genre.
