Even with having a few days of less or no reading time, I'm on track - ahead, even - with both my main challenge and subchallenges, other than the buying new ebooks one where I'm still suffering from the March Kobo coupon. On the other hand, I didn't go over my self-set limit of ten books bought a month in April, so at least there's that.

I read more now that I work at home than when I had to regularly commute to work and back. I can't read on the bus, so there would never have been any reading done while travelling anyway. And thanks to not having to spend two hours a day on just getting somewhere and then back again, I have more time and energy left by the end of the day to sit and read.

Fortunately I take the light rail system here, although I can read on the bus too on the rare occasion I have to take that. If I couldn't read while riding (I used to get motion sickness but got over it) I would probably look for a different job. I would HATE the commute I have if not for reading.

Yeah - I've only really ever taken the train when abroad on holiday and can read there, although not with a lot of comfort (plus when travelling, I want to look out of the window instead anyway!), and I can read on a plane or a ferry, but cars, buses, or trams... nope.

I can't even look at the mail when coming up the stairs with it at home - instant dizziness guaranteed.

I don't like to read while in motion, either. It gives me a headache. I use my train time to listen to podcasts.

I had to go into Vancouver the other day. I read an Audible book for the hour of driving, and switched to an eBook for the hour on the Ferry, and the half hour on the bus. But I admit, I'd usually prefer an Audible book for the bus portion.

Goodreads has me two books behind schedule (32%), but my goal is my best number of books read in a year (94 from 2012) so I'm not really on a schedule.

My reading should pick up a bit when the weather gets nicer and I go back to reading on the back deck weekend mornings; the kids come out with me and play their Kindles while I read on my NOOK HD+ while my husband sleeps in. It seems like when I'm in the house, I have a dozen other things to do, but if I step just outside the door, then I can relax and read for awhile. After all, we're staying quiet for Daddy.

Lousy stans.

According to Goodreads, I am nine books ahead of schedule, but that's dropping like a rock right now.

I'm still on par for my Goodreads schedule, but I'm no longer ahead. I found it difficult to listen or read with endless coughing from this last illness that swept through all of us. In addition, was proofing (and reading) my first OCR conversion! I'm now halfway through my 'age' challenge. Come July though, I will have to start making an effort to pick books in years I haven't read rather than just random reading and adding.

Currently listening to one of my favorite books, Sword of Shannara. Then a return to Dresden Files (Turn Coat).

Well done, Harry. At this rate, you might make 120, which is my goal. I'm also in good shape on mine. And I'm keeping my list up to date, which is harder.

Two days ago I finally finished the Professor Challenger works, after... Uh... two months. I've decided to reread The Belgariad and Malloreon, and I'm already at 70% of the first book. Still, I'm half a millennium behind.

1/2 way there!

Later today I should finish book #33 for the year which will take me over the 50% mark of my page goal at 12,018 pages.

The 50% mark meant it was time to look at how I am doing versus past years, so far this year the changes in my reading habits that have jumped out at me are:
  • I have read 27 authors, 14 of which are new to me (47% of books this year vs 68% of books overall). So I am reading more by familiar authors than normal. Overall, I have read 137 new authors out of 155 total authors in the last 3.5 years. Some of those new authors are included as familiar authors in later years (Hugh Howey, David Weber, Connie Willis, etc.)
  • I have averaged 364 pages per book vs an overall average of 321 pgs/bk. I am reading longer books than normal, possibly tied to the familiar authors above.
  • I have only re-read 1 book (3% vs 13% overall), but the difference is much greater in page counts - 1% this year vs 23% overall. I have been working hard on this one and hope to get my overall below 20% by the end of the year.
  • I have read books in 12 different genres (including sub-genres). Again, I am trying to read a more diverse selection of books. I will always like fantasy books but it has been good to read and find other things I like.
  • I have purchased 6 books, read 3 of them, and borrowed 15 from the library. I have only been able to borrow e-books from my library since last year which has really helped my budget. I love my library again!

Sure, with some caveats... My list is tailored for what I read and tends to put some things together that probably deserve to be separate since I don't read much in some areas. Also, I don't have a lot of popular genres and sub-genres (romance, etc.) since I don't read them at all. If I do happen to read something in one of those I tend to find the closest space it will fit and note that it is shoe-horned to fit in my notes. I do sometimes add to my list, but that hasn't happened for a while now.

Here is what I use with a brief description. Bold items are ones that I have read this year so far.
Spoiler:
Adventure - The journey is the important part (Allen Quatermain, etc)
Children's - Kids books (Holes, Bridge to Terabithia)
Classic - Verne, Twain, etc. Can almost certainly be another genre too.
Fantasy - Swords and sorcery (set in a fantasy setting)
Fiction Misc - Literary or other non-genre fiction
Historical Fiction - Robin Hood, Civil War, etc.
Horror - More than just vampires
Mystery - Holmes, Marple, Drew, Hardy (not thrillers)
N-F (Non-Fiction)/Biographies - (Auto) Biographies, True Stories, etc.
N-F/History - History Books
N-F/Humor - Humor
N-F/Other - General Knowledge
N-F/Philosophy - Plato, etc.
N-F/Reference - Textbooks, manuals, etc.
N-F/Religion - Christian study or reference
Paranormal - Superheroes, mutants, modern magic, etc. (inludes urban fantasy like Dresden)
Post-Apocalyptic - Includes Dystopian (Hunger Games, Wool, etc.)
Religious Fiction - Lehay, Jenkins, Peretti, etc. (Left Behind, etc)
Science Fiction - General science fiction, i.e., medical, computers, etc.
Space SciFi - Aliens, space opera, military sci fi, etc.
Steampunk - w/ or w/o magic
Suspense - Less action, more suspense
Thriller, Legal - Crime, police, etc. (Grisham, Patterson)
Thriller, MedTech - Medical/techno thrillers (Crichton, Preston)
Thriller, Political - Military, espionage, conspiracy, etc. (Clancy, Ludlum)
Unknown - Books in progress by authors I follow that don't have enough description to classify yet.
Western - Lamour, etc.
