Yes! Hobson's Choice.

And now I must admit to another mistake. There isn't a book. There is a play, and a film, but my memory of having read it in school as a teenager must be a false memory - probably mixing it up with some gritty book set in the North of England.

It is an excellent play, and the 1954 film is well worth getting on DVD.
