Hey!! Let's get some action going! What are we reading?
Quote:
I finished this yesterday and enjoyed it so much that I got the second book in the series, The League of Frightened Men right away. In Fer-de-Lance, the culprit wasn't difficult to figure out after getting to know the characters but the book still held my interest. The ending was unexpected though. Nero Wolfe and Archie Goodwin; I loved these two characters and the repartee that goes on between them is entertaining. Those looking for a good mystery and haven't yet read this one should do so. |

Now, I think, time for some of Miss Silver. Lonesome Road, #3 in the series by Patricia Wentworth, whose works are public domain here in Canada. This, and almost all the rest of the Miss Silver books, are available in excellent editions from Faded Page. Some have made their way over to PG Canada, but that process seems uneven for reasons that aren't clear to me. |

Next up: Spheres of Influence by Ryk Spoor. Slightly nervous after Charlie's comments. |

BTW, #20 in the Phryne Fisher Series, Murder and Mendelssohn written by Kerry Greenwood is still not available in either the US or Canada as an eBook, so I finally gave up and bought it from Audible. It is read by Stephanie Daniel, and very well read indeed. This is the last of the Phryne books that Ms. Greenwood has written so far, and I really can't stand the thought that I'm going to have to wait some indefinite time to get a new one. They are such little gems. Witty and wonderful.
The reviews of this particular one have been somewhat mixed, but I honestly can't understand the complainers. It has very much the same feel as earlier ones, is just as well written, and they've never been PG. All in all, it's still very much Phryne. |

What do you mean when you say "they've never been PG", Charlie?

I think he's referencing film classifications, in particular "Parental Guidance".

Correct. (Though what I should have said is that they weren't G-rated.) What I was trying to say is that there's always been a certain amount of adult content in the Phyrne books. This one seems to have a bit more, but certainly nothing I found either offensive or prurient.
And I decided to take a quick swing to visit my friends in Australia with a 55% coupon, and buy the eBook version. No whispersync, but I'll still want to have it to be able to read. |

I've just finished "Hull Zero Three" by Greg Bear.
A man wakes up in a strange place, not knowing where he is or even who he is. He gradually discovered that he's on a huge starship, which seems to be trying to kill him, but why is he there, and what is he supposed to be doing? Pretty good SF. |

Currently reading The Murder at the Vicarage by Agatha Christie. The first "Miss Marple" mystery. Excellent so far.

Reading The Assassin's Mark by David Ebsworth. Set during the final year of the Spanish Civil War, it is a murder mystery with the war as a backdrop. The story follows a group of British tourists, taking advantage of the tours arranged by the Franco regime in the areas they controlled before the official end of the war. Interesting so far (about half way through). I think it is an easier read if you know something about the war (which I do), as I imagine that the references to the political factions and background to the war may be difficult to follow.

Just finished Charles Stross's "Equoid," which is on the Hugo ballot for Best Novella. Very entertaining, and the self-consciously "contagious" Lovecraft styling is deftly done.
Plus, y'know, demonic unicorns. Gotta love that. ![]() |

Now for The Good, The Bad and the Undead by Kim Harrison. The second in her Rachel Morgan/The Hollows series. I liked the first one, but I'm not sure her world building is coherent enough for me. We'll see how this one goes. |
