The whole point of it is to minimise radio emissions, for use on submarines. Sticking a radio transmitter (ie WiFi) on the thing would rather defeat the purpose.

It wasn't, what I was asking was why the navy wouldn't order them with touchscreens. To cut down the cost you said. I then stated that one would think that the military wouldn't mind paying more for a better device (Implied it. Whatever). Methinks we have had a misunderstanding

Not our military. Since they have no problem sending our troops into harm's way with improper equipment, I wouldn't expect them to go all out for entertaining the troops.

Right, this is for fairly specific uses where they may not want a sailor using their own personal device(s).




The Navy also has an OverDrive library for sailors (& families) to use with personal devices...
