In the future, nobody will pay for a single copy of a book. We will pay for access. And it will be unlimited and unrestrained.
Everybody will share everything, and authors will be paid per-quality rather than per-copy.

They'll cry for some years after the legalized thieves spoiling them, but in the long term they'll just write better books. Or not write at all.

Of course hardcopies will be paid, but as objects, not content. Content is already paid for with access.

Mp3 sharing rings who pay licenses are already on the way...

I don't know if "everybody" will do it this way. This is like the difference between a Zune pass vs iTunes music. With iTunes you buy each song and can listed to it forever with that 1 time fee. With a Zune pass you can listen to any song in the library as long as you keep paying your monthly fee. Some people like one way, some the other.

But apparently there is a way to do the all-you-can-eat for a monthly fee price and still get royalties back to the RIAA somehow. Not sure if there is any usage tracking to divy it up or how that works.

In many cases, it's probably the DRM that encourages piracy. Computer software is a lot like that, especially games. There are a bunch of games out there where the DRM is so aggressive, the only way some legitimate purchasers of the game can get it to run on their PC is to download a cracked copy. I've run into that several times.

This is pretty much true for any DRM scheme... since something that legitamatly reads the file needs to have the key to decrypt it.

I think "easy" means that the tools to do so are readily avialable. I can remove the encryption from any LIT if I have the keys for it... even if I didn't buy it.
Yeah, that's why I try to say the DRM has been removed, rather than cracked. Mobipocket is the same way. You have to have a legitimate key to remove it.

The end result is the same though. It only takes one person with a key to remove the DRM and then put the "open" file on the sharing sites. That pretty much renders DRM useless, whether it's technically been cracked or not.

Then i'll rather remove the drm now than wait until they somehow lock me off my books ?
I had been wondering, what happens if mobipoket closes, and i change my reader ?

If the Mobipocket servers close down, you won't be able to authorize any new reading devices.

Even while the servers are available you still have to re-download your books after authorizing another device.

So I buy non-DRM ebooks where possible, or remove the DRM as soon as I can.

Yeah, that's why I do it too. The other thing I've run into a couple times is having to re-install the OS on a PC. You end up with a new Mobipocket PID each time it happens. You can go re-download every book you own with the new PID activated, but it's a lot easier to just get rid of the DRM.

The way to discourage copying is no DRM and reasonable prices. Heck, I know the next book I am about to purchase will eventually make it to the darknet and I would then be able to download it. But because I can now get it at $3.50, I don't mind buying it.

What you are describing already exists and it’s, per example the DRM used in the eReader, and one of the principal reasons that as made it a very popular format.

In Microsoft Reader DRM lingo, it’s the level 3 of DRM:

“Inscribed eBooks
Inscribed content displays information from the purchaser (for example, the name of the purchaser) on the cover page. This reinforces honest usage by consumers.”

Still Microsoft Reader and “similar” formats - ex: Mobipocket - uses the level 5 of DRM:

“Owner Exclusive eBooks
Publishers provide these eBooks with inscribed security plus an additional encrypted license that requires you to activate your computer for Microsoft Reader before purchasing and reading these eBooks. Publishers prohibit you from copying and pasting text from Owner Exclusive eBooks into other applications. They also prohibit you from using the Text-to-Speech functionality.”
