I like to be around almost all types of animals but I only love cats. My dog, Willow, is a great little girl but my Hammy rules my heart.

I must be a dog AND cat person. I started as a cat person ... married into two shih tzus, who love to slather me with attention. Since the cats were more stand-offish, the dogs won. Now I've removed the husband but kept the two dogs (the cats went elsewhere a few years back). However, having to come home to walk/feed them inhibits any evening activities, so I may get cats again, when these two age. |

Ahh, that's just luvverly, Slite! BTW, you're full-of-shit about your photo skilz, you know - you could post photos like this and in your avatar all day long and I'd be watching them. (BTW, Monty used to rarely lay like that, but Oscar does it all the time. Maggie never lies like that, and objects totally to being "rolled". Her Royal Highness/Golden Girl/Queen B gets on her back for no-one!) I'm going to blow up my own strumpet, and post this again: Cheers, Marc |

I have waited a long time to answer this one because I wanted to carefully choose my words as not to offend anyone. But I know it will. I love animals, all animals, even squirrels, and especially cats and dogs. I've had both at the same and at different times. Loved them all. Sadly, two years ago I've had to have my two cats put to sleep because after a 5 year relationship they started a disatrous marking habit with urine(they were both neutered). My wife and I tried everything for a full year! We painfully gave up... After a long lonely period I came to the thought that it is wrong to have an animal, wrong to its nature. Ther is no right way about it. Since then I've devoted my time to people instead. That is where our care should be. My personal reasons for having animals were for selfish reasons. Deep down they are, trust me. No animal can live freely under man's conditions. If ever I get involved with them, it will be a relation of respect in the wild. One where I will only try to tame for a short while, just enough to enjoy a peek. |

No offense taken, Yvan. It makes me very happy to see that people still think and feel deeply. I'm sorry about your cats and understand perfectly your viewpoint. Our dog (so remotely related to her wolf ancestors that the relationship is difficult to see) wasn't even meant to be. I look at my daughters and can only think that they were never "intended" (whatever that means) to preen themselves daily, eat stuff out of cans, drive places, stand and work for hours in an air conditioned box, etc. I can't change any of that to any meaninful extent unless we all strip naked and head for the hills. I can just try to be sensitive to how unnatural life is for everyone and try to do the best I can.

I would not advocate that anyone should get rid of their animals, just that we not forget our responsibilities over nature, and what our relationship to it should be. BTW I do like meat! And some naked people!

My reasons for having animals is because they were about to be put to death. Mostly because they were old, crippled or sick. Some because, like you, the former family could not deal with a behavior problem. My way of thinking was that it was at least marginally better to have the animals living with me than it was to kill them. Other than that .... well, I really shouldn't have animals because I'm so damn allergic to them.

I have a lot of sympathy with Yvan's comments. I must admit that I am appalled to hear of people who have their cats de-clawed, so as to protect thir furnishings. Cats need their claws to climb and to hold things. (Vets mostly won't do this in the UK, but I've heard that it is done in the USA.) And I hate the way that some terriers have their tails docked, and other breeds are known to have hereditary problems. I honestly feel that people who want spotless upholstery should not have cats: it's just not fair to mutilate the creature. And some pedigree breeds of dogs should be allowed to become extinct: why breed a creature who will suffer from arthritis or respiratory problems? But there are exceptions: people (like Ricky, Zelda and my daughter, among others) who live with rescued animals. Also people who actually think about whether they can provide a good home for a creature, so that it can thrive according to its kind. |

The last cat we had was put down because of illness and inability to control his bowels. We may have been able to cure that, at great expense, but chose not to. Was that wrong? (Theoretical question here, no need to answer folks.) Some would ask if a member of the family would receive the same treatment. I loved my cat, but still, realized it was an animal. Did it affect us? Yes, my husband refused to even think of another pet for years.....and fought mightily to NOT have the cat we have now. Of course, the kitty decided HE was the favorite immediately, and stays on his lap most of the time. The way I look at it, we're giving this kitty years he would never had have. He wouldn't have lasted another few days on the street in his condition. My own personal gut wrenchers are zoos. Regardless of the 'humanitarian' reasons to have them (Breeding soon to extinct species, etc.) I cannot abide watch the poor animals in cages. Do you know, In Arkansas, there is a man who keeps Cougars in cages, breeds them and sells them as 'exotic' pets? Its legal.
