I can't read anymore on eInk since I got my Nexus 7. I'm spoiled with that high PPI. After reading on it all my Kindles text looks like crud. Still I keep my K4 handy in case there ever a chance to read outside which for me probably will never happen since I don't like the sun.

I am really struggling reading the Scribd books on my Fire HD. Its large so of course its a bit heavy, but that isn't what is mostly bothering me. Its the backlit. My eyes start flickering after a while. I can't really describe it, but it feels like the letters start floating on me. I get the same when I stare at my computer for long time and read posts like these for too long. I have to move my eyes around to do other stuff and that is then distracting to me when I am trying to immerse myself.
That is really the problem, I can't get into the book and disappear like I can on e-ink. I am constantly aware of everything and its so much slower. And yes, I have my light turned down, any more down and I'll need night vision goggles to see. ![]() I mean I still have to be able to see the letters, or my eyes really are straining. Maybe some duper duper new small tablet would be better but I don't know that and I don't have the budget for one anyway. I suspect there won't be a lot of difference for my eyes though. My Fire HD isn't a bad tablet. Its the 2012 version, not the current one. But I have glanced at my hubbies ipad retina he has and that thing made me so dizzy just looking at the icons I gave it back. That thing is a vertigo machine. So at the speed I am going right now trying to read a Scribd book on my tablet, I am not sure if its worth it for me. Its just not as much fun to read this way. I still have time, thanks to the generous free time, but it isn't looking good for me right now. |

What you're describing is eyestrain. I'm starting to get that. One reason that reading on my phone has gotten annoying now is that I have to crank the font way up 'cause I'm in my 40s now

I have been using Flux for several months and it has completely changed my relationship with my devices. ETA: Unfortunately f.lux is only available on iOs if you are jailbroken

I can read for hours on my e-ink kindles so that has always been a joy to read on. But back lit stuff? So far not as pleasant. I keep trying. I am always afraid they'll get rid of e-ink all together one day and then what do I do. I can't read paperbacks as well either as the font is so small. I went from 5 books a year reading to 189 the first year with my kindle back in 2008/2009. |

The night mode with sepia lettering works better for me than with white lettering, fwiw.

I'd think you'd get better pdf reading on the tablets than the e-ink readers? Do you, or does it depend on size like full size iPads are really best?

Atunah, I assume you've already played around with the brightness settings? I read on my phone all the time, with white background and black text, and about 25% brightness and that seems to work just fine for me. |
