Black Friday is the day after Thanksgiving in the US; the biggest sale day of the year; much like Boxing Day in Canada and the UK.

Actually, alot of people say that, but its not actually. Usually the Saturday before Christmas is the busyest shopping day... black Friday has the most sales. Although, last year for the first time in the while is was bigger than Saturday before Christmas.

thanks for the answers. what an odd name : usually a "black" day has some connotation of cataclysme, like Black Tuesday... i would not have expected it just to mean "lots of money spent" unless it's a reference to the catastrophic effect of this spending on the individual consumer's pocketbook...

One person;s black is anothers green

When I worked in retail many years ago we looked at that Friday as being black because as sales clerks we were very busy and people would come into the store that obviously only shop when there is a big holiday so you would be answering questions and finding stuff for them with very little time for a break or to eat. Most of the year retail work is long periods of quiet with brief periods of activity, black FRiday is not a typical day.

It is called black because it is when the company gets out of the red. Many retail outlets depend on Christmas sales to achieve a profit for the year.

aha. another example of the confusion that occurs when a word has more than one figurative meaning.

Black Friday is the biggest sales day in the USA. Every major retailer, especially COSTCO, works all year lining up special promotions for that day. It is a chance for new companies to show their sales power; and all existing vendors are demanded to decrease prices for that one day,

Black Friday is a reference to this one day (hopefully) putting retailers into the BLACK INK for the Christmas Season.

By the way, the first shipment of EZ Readers by Astak is now in our warehouse and we have a short waiting list. You can email to rubyl@teamresearchinc.com to be put on the waiting list. The device comes with a full and beautiful crush-resistent case and ear buds all for $324. We are setting up a website now with tips and Bob's Corner and a FAQ sheet which should be ready in less than two weeks and then we ship. THIS is the unit that gives 8,000 pages of text on a single charge, has a replacable battery, has the SD card slot, plays stereo music with an equalizer, and is backed by the USA Astak company. It is a Jinke Hanlin V3 distributed by Astak... so you know it is dependable and stable and works beautifully. Tachnical Support is all USA. It weighs 6.5 ounces and is .3 inch in thickness!

Again:

rubyl@teamresearchinc.com

If by biggest "sales" day you mean that retailers usually have the most promotions (sales) then yes this is true. If you mean biggest revenue day then that is generally not true. I mentioned this on another thread. Here from Wikipedia:

Quote:
The news media frequently refer to Black Friday as the busiest retail shopping day of the year, but this is not always accurate. While it has been one of the busiest days in terms of customer traffic,[1][2] in terms of actual sales volume, from 1993 through 2001 Black Friday was usually the fifth to tenth busiest day.[3] In 2002 and 2004, however, Black Friday ranked second place.[4] The busiest retail shopping day of the year in the United States (in terms of both sales and customer traffic) usually has been the Saturday before Christmas.[5] In 2003 and 2005, however, Black Friday actually did reach first place.[6]

Dear All of MobileRead Forum:

Just so all know, the first shipment of 500 EZ Readers (by Astak) is into our warehouse and the new www.mobiebook.com website is under construction... opening in 10-14 days. Visit it and take a look!

Membership on our site is free and sign-up to be a member takes only a few moments! We have a special price of $299 for the EZ Reader with Leather Crush-Resistant Carrying Case and Ear Buds (included) to the first 100 buyers (at least) on that site. It includes 8 free classics pre-loaded. Anybody on our waiting list will get this same deal... so do not worry. The email for waiting list is: rubyl@teamresearchinc.com

This price is about $30 LESS than I told you it would cost... so that is refreshing!

We will be shipping as soon as the new website is operational!

Agreeing with the title of this thread:

I've spent over a month on this decision and in the end what I want is best summarised by the features of the upcoming plastic logic product (assuming it's launched in Q1 or Q2 next year):

- no compromise in reading all your existing content
- ability to create an enewspaper by wirelessly syncing feeds
- touchscreen (including gestures and annotation)
- same long battery life as current ereaders (other than Iliad)
- plastic substrate screen for more durability
- ability to read any kind of content including newly purchased content

After looking in depth at each of Sony 700, 505, Iliad, bebook, cybook and the price in Aussie dollars it seems worth waiting for the new devices that will come in next year. I've always been an early adopter of new technology but the time does not seem right just yet.

Whether its too early or not to jump on the eReader bandwagon is a matter of personal choice and how much use you will get out of the current offerings.

I remember the first personal computer I bought...they kept getting better and cheaper; however, the longer I delayed buying, the more I deprived myself of the many opportunities where it would've made life easier.

When I finally bit the bullet, I promised myself that I wouldn't second guess my decision based on dropping prices/new features...they were a given. I never regretted it as my use far outweighed the investment. As new features came out, I stayed happy with what I had until the benefits justified the upgrade.

I see it no differently for eReaders.

As personal computers became more mainstream in households, the technology/costs stabilized a bit more and I am not as worried about the longevity. This will eventually happen to eReaders but it will take some time.

In the meantime, my Kindle has the functionality and content availability that makes my investment worthwhile.

Personally, I am saving money on my book purchasing behavior and figure that in addition to the enjoyment of having an eReader, I will have offset the cost in a year. So even if I decide to upgrade in 18-24 months, I will have no regrets.
