can i create a show and hide button for portions of text, (similar to MobileReads wiki indexes,) in a AZW3 format ebook?

javascript requires the EPUB3 standard. KF8 does no support javascript either.

No buttons or reactive content. Sorry.

No. The Kindle format doesn't support any form of scripting.

You could, however, achieve something similar with hyperlinks. Have a link to jump to the "hidden" content ("Click here to view the hidden text", or whatever), and put it on a separate page at the end of the book, with a link back to the original location.
