I'm still puzzled about Ratty. I looked up my copy and it says, where Mole first meets him:

A brown little face, with whiskers.
A grave round face, with the same twinkle in its eye that had first attracted his notice.

It was the Water Rat!

Mind you, it's a long time since I read it, so maybe it says he's a Water Vole somewhere else?

ETA: Sorry - should have googled first - I see the Water Vole is informally called a water rat. We do have water rats, hence my confusion.
