Dorsai! by Gordon R. Dickson is on sale at Amazon US and B&N US for $1.99
Quote:
Overview
On the planet Arcadia, a young man and woman and a swamp otter join together to haul the otter's eleven hundred pound statue overland to meet the deadline of a prospective buyer from another planet.
The work that launched Dickson's popular Childe Cycle--often referred to as "The Dorsai Series"--tells of the planet Dorsai's mercenary soldiers, the planet's chief export to the stars, and how they come to understand their crucial role in human history. Special introduction by David Drake. Dickson is the author of Wolf and Iron.

Amazon UK has Artemis Fowl for £0.99 in today's Kindle Daily Deal.

"Eoin Colfer, author of Artemis Fowl, describes his creation as "Die Hard with fairies". He's not far wrong. Artemis Fowl is the most ingenious criminal mastermind in history and with his trusty sidekicks, Butler and Juliet, in tow he hatches a cunning plot to divest the fairyfolk of their pot of gold. Of course, he isn't foolish enough to believe in all that "gold at the end of the rainbow" nonsense. Rather, he knows that the only way to separate the little people from their stash is to kidnap one of their number and wait for the ransom to arrive. But when the time comes to put his plan into action he reckons without Captain Holly Short of the LEPrecon (Lower Elements Police Reconnaisance) Unit--a sort of extra small Clarice Starling with pointy ears and wings--and her senior officer Commander Root, a man (sorry, elf) who will stop at nothing to get her back.
Fantastic stuff from beginning to end, Artemis Fowl is a rip-roaring, 21st-century romp of the highest order. The author has let his imagination run riot by combining folklore, fantasy and a fistful of high-tech funk in an outrageously devilish book that could well do for fairies what Harry Potter has done for wizardry. But be warned: this is no gentle frolic so don't be fooled by the fairy subject matter. Instead what we have here is well written, sophisticated, rough and tumble storytelling with enough high-octane attitude to make it a seriously cool read for anyone over the age of 10. --Susan Harrison"

It's a fun 10+ book, if you can stand (or like!) the 'derivation' of various terms.

This sounds wonderful. Thank you. I am getting this one now. Are the others in the series as good?

My children were just the right age for these when they came out, so we have pretty much all of them in hardback. I enjoyed them all, although I'm not sure I've read the last one yet.

Maybe I've just been confused - a not uncommon occurrence, especially when Kobo is involved - but I'd swear that Baen ebooks didn't used to be available from the Kobo-US bookstore. I never bothered checking Kobo since I already knew that they didn't have them.

Have I been imagining this?

This post from January would seem to indicate that I'm not totally imagining things.

In case I'm not the only one, Baen ebooks are now (again?) available and discount eligible at the Kobo US bookstore. Now I can buy more books with the Kobo contest codes. Yay! More cheap ebooks!

A story of history, time travel, love, friendship and tea. Meet the disaster-magnets at the St Mary's Institute of Historical Research as they ricochet around history, observing, documenting, drinking tea and, if possible, not dying.
