Anna Katherine Green's works are out of copyright and available free here on MR.

I confess I downloaded the whole set some time ago, and then deleted them all unread after reading Julian Symons' opinion in his 1972 history of the genre, Bloody Murder.

Why didn't you read them? What's the book about?

Another vote for the Nero Wolfe novels here. Also, you might try Josephine Tey--the Franchise Affair in particular. And if you'd like to try an absorbing mystery that's a variation on the classic whodunit, take a look at Reginald Hill's The Stranger House.

If you like Agatha Christie, then you'll enjoy Rhys Bowen.
Pretty light reads, but very enjoyable

I have too much to read, and a negative opinion was the excuse I needed to remove a block of 35 books I didn't think I'd ever read. Besides, they're still available if I change my mind.

Bloody Murder is a history of mystery and crime fiction by the crime writer Julian Symons. It's quite hard to get hold of now, but I managed to get a mouldy old second-hand copy of the 1972 edition last year. (There was a revised version in the eighties.) It's quite opinionated, and I don't agree with everything in it, but it did sound like Anna Katherine Green was not for me.

Other Golden Age authors, you might like (suggested title in brackets) include: Ngaio Marsh, (Death in a White Tie), J. J. Connington (Murder in the Maze), Cyril Hare (Tragedy at Law), Helen McCloy (Alias Basil Willing), Edmund Crispin (The Moving Toyshop), Nicholas Blake (The Beast Must Die) and Henry Wade. All except Wade are available in e-book form.

I recently enjoyed "Six Against the Yard". The latter was first published in 1936 and is a collection of stories by six well-known crime writers (Margery Allingham, Anthony Berkeley, Freeman Wills Crofts, Ronald Knox, Dorothy L. Sayers and Russell Thorndike) of the time. After each effort, a retired (real) policeman comments on how/why the murder would be less-than-perfect. Recently re-issued - ebook available.

Modern authors and series:

Duncan Kincaid/Gemma James series by Deborah Crombie
Shetland series by Ann Cleeves
Bryant & May series by Christopher Fowler

Lots to enjoy

I think I might have read this long ago, but the premise sounds great and since my library has it I'll certainly give it another go, thanks for the recommendation.

Honestly, my top 10 whodunnits would all be Agatha Christie books. If you really enjoyed reading the 4 you mention, just carry on with more Christie.

There are a couple of others I should've mentioned:

Donna Leon's Brunetti series (set on Venice)
http://store.kobobooks.com/en-in/Sea...ery=donna+leon

The Killing, books 1, 2 and 3 - based on the Danish tv series - and written by David Hewson. The tv series was sooo goood!! (So as the Danes asked Hewson to write the books I'm going to assume that they're very faithful to the tv script)

The baseball mystery books by Troy Soos. Following a young second-string infielder as he solves one murder after another in the early 1900's. Murder at Fenway Park is the first in the series. If you like baseball you'll love these.

Are they comprehensible to those of us to whom baseball is a complete mystery, do you think?
