I received an answer yesterday from a lawyer of the Swiss Copyright Office, stating unconditionally that there is indeed no additional protection for scientific or posthumous editions after the period of 70 years and that those works are in the Swiss public domain.

Harry, would the mods like to see the email exchange for further review? I could send it to Alexander, then (it’s in German).

Let me get this straight with a real example.

The unedited autobiography of Mark Twain has been recently released in the US. Never before released this way. It is automatically P.D. in Switzerland. Twain died in 1910.

That would certainly seem to be the case.

The copyright of the autobiography in the US is murky. The previously unpublished bits are clearly public domain, as unpublished works in the US get life+70 and nothing else.

The status of the previously published bits is the question. It seems likely that these are still in copyright in the US, until at least 2020.
