In Angor's image, when the brightness drops below 14% the light just turns off. I usually read in 1-8% brightness range with the lights off. It just doesn't go down as low =/

If it does happen, you need some free space in your external card, depending on the size of the internal card (usually 2Gb).

Don't forget that you can always backup your internal card with your PC.
Sorry, I have a Kobo Touch. Thanks for the advice. How would I go about backing it up with my PC? Bit of a newb here. Thanks again.

You could open your device as described here, get the SD card to your PC and use something like Flash Drive Image Creator to make an image out of it.
You can restore that image later with Flash Drive Image Writer.

Taking out the card is the only way to restore your backed up image anyway.

Thanks embryo. I was reading the memory card as being nearly full, but it was actually mostly empty. I got it working. Thanks for your help.

Thanks for the sharing! This is really a great thread.

I just install [MarekGibek's]+++ dual boot version on my kobo glo. But I met a little problem:
The ON-OFF LED APP doesn't work on my kobo. If it is ON, I have green on-off LED blinking. If it is OFF, I have blue-white LED blinking....It can not be turned off. I am going to try the script trick, but I can't see where locates the ScriptManager App's MENU ..and the only button only helps to close the App, not switch to the menu...

Any suggestions? honestly I can stand the blinking LED.

The LED app I think has a testing, not a switching, purpose.

I use the SManager (with its really difficult UI)

You have to locate the script from within the program.
When you open it, you have to click at the 'Fav' (Star) and 'Boot' (Gear) once.
You can't see if its pressed or not, so be very careful.
After that, press 'Save' and 'Exit'

This is how I did it anyway.
I hope there are no UI differences with newer versions...

Thanks. It works perfectly! I copy and save the script as xxxx.sh in windows, then move it to kobo. After following your instructions and reboot it, LED blink is gone!

Thumbs up

Up and running... thanks guys!

Kobo Touch N905J booting off the internal microsd card.

I used [MarekGibek's] For a Touch image... 2013-11-23_Android_Kobo_Touch.img

I wasn't sure which to start with, so I tried a few of the others first.
They initially started booting but entered an infinite reboot loop partway through the load.

I've no need for dual booting, so I went with the simpler process of removing the sd card and putting the .img on it. Super easy.

Earlier, I tried unsuccessfully to put Android on an other Touch but I found out (too late) that the original Touch's don't have an internal SD card. DOH! The update files worked fine, but when I flashed the memory, it bricked. I popped the back off to get at the internal microSD when I discovered the sad truth. I made sure to get a late model Touch for the second attempt.

I'm super happy with the result.

Hello Embryo,

The "kolino" is working pretty nice although at the same time it feels quite unstable.
Lots of programs shutting down and sudden reboots every time the free RAM gets under 100mb which seems rather strange to me.
I mean 100mb is still almost half the RAM, right? Do you have an idea why programs shut down with still 99mb of RAM available?

Further I would like to ask you if you can tell me what the following programs do and if I can uninstall them or replace them?

Many thanks in advance.

EDPRefresh ?
LED ?
MsgE6 ?
PowerMechanismService ?

Thats strange.
Maybe the programs you use, need a lot of ram?
The readers I use don't crash, but then again, I haven't test them thoroughly yet.

EDPRefresh is used for smart refresh. Check this post.
LED ? (Maybe LED testing, but not sure)
MsgE6. Don't know the main purpose but inside it are the the pictures shown on sleep, shut down, low battery, etc.
PowerMechanismService ?

FBReader X

After some testing, I think that the FBReader 1.9.4 for Nook Simple Touch drains the battery really fast, so I switched to the current version instead.
After some reading, it seems to work better.
I don't think that the Kobos are utilizing the Nook code anyway.
But in the normal version, although it has the same settings with the NST version, some backgrounds are not displayed properly.
So, I modified the apk to use a 'light' theme, and now it looks exactly like the NST version but without the drain.

P.S. I uploaded the apk here for anyone who wants it.
I don't know if its against the forum rules.
If it is, I'll take it down.

File Type: zip FBReaderX_1.9.6.1.apk.zip (3.51 MB, 301 views)

Can someone make dualboot for Aura (not HD)?
I've tried dualboot for Aura HD on Aura - it not launching Android, but not bricking device ether. After restart, Nickel is booting. So, Aura seams unbrickable and I'm ready to try all what you'll give me.

Root for Dualboot Android

Hello,
first of all I would like to thank all of those who have contributed to this wonderful project, you were the reason I recently bought a Kobo Glo instead of going for a Kindle.

I have successfully installed the dualboot android, but I am lacking root functionality. I have followed the Tolino rooting tutorial with the hope of having a rooted android on my external memory card, but I get stuck at the first boot.
After managing to successfully flash the backup_internal_sd_shine_after_sys_recover.img to a spare card, I can't boot from it by using the "hold light button down" technique, having it stuck at the red led.

Is it not yet possible to root the external sd, or am I missing something?

Thanks!

The Android images are already rooted.
If you already applied the patches for dual booting Glo (fix-udev-tgz.zip and dualboot-android-glo-touch.zip), you only have to download the SD image and flash it to your external SD card.
After that, you power up while holding the Light button and !!!Android!!!
