I have heard a lot about the Aura HD, however the reason that I chose Amazon over B&N and Kobo is the prices on amazon. I think that Amazon's business strategy is to compete based on price, thus they seem to have lower prices on most books. How are the prices on the Kobo site? Do they have low prices on what you want to read or are they constantly the high price.

What are you hearing about the features of the forthcoming Paper white model three? I passed up the model two since there did not appear to be enough improvement to warrant the price of the reader and I am considering the model three when it comes available.

If you Alf your books and convert with Calibre, it doesn't matter where you buy from. I buy books from Kobo, Amazon, Smashwords, indies, all over the place. With Kobo books, the thing to do is haunt the Discounts thread - there are frequently discount codes up to 65% and even higher. These don't apply to all books, but I've had a lot of luck with them.

A couple of weeks ago I bought about 20 books for 90% off. Last night I bought 3 books for 65 and 70% off.

As far as Paperwhite 3, there was one unsubstantiated rumor back in November and nothing since then. If Amazon copies the Aura form factor then I would consider picking up a PW3 as I like the Kindle dictionary and I like the idea of books that get emailed to them will automatically sync even if they weren't bought through Amazon. On the other hand, I'll have to explain to my wife why I'm getting a third e-reader in just over a year and a half!

As a member of the "still happy with my pw1"-club I'm wondering which way Amazon will go with the 3rd generation Paperwhite.

It must be said that I'm happy with the pw1 only in part due to Amazon hard- and software. Things like hyphenation, working embedded fonts, additional font choices etc are for me of great significance. Calibre, plugins and some products of the "dev corner" add a good deal to my reading experience (thank you to all involved)!

Now with the hardware I see a 300+ dpi screen, better light and a faster processor.
With the software I fear Amazon will follow the route set with PW2 (and the 5.4 firmware for the PW1): more or less no development concerning the core "render a formatted text on an ink screen" and no development of user choices to influence text rendering but more "apps" and "social media".

For me a buyable PW3 must have:
- user selectable Hyphenation and Text Justification
- full font kerning
- full support of CSS3 (example: page-break, widows and orphans tags)
- seamless integration of embedded fonts
- option to install custom fonts

No, I don't buy books because my favourite font is used; and I think I'm not "anal retentive" about text layout. But I hope Amazon will have a look at the user interface and at the text rendering. If not Kobo may be the way to go for my next e-reader.

There is no "300dpi+" eInk screen available. Amazon can only use screens which actually exist.

How great a reduction in battery life are you willing to accept for the sake of a faster processor? It's always a compromise between processor speed and power consumption.

Thanks, guys. Since it is just rumors about an upcoming Kindle PW, I went ahead and got the current one from Best Buy. I do love it so far. It is really quick, as you say, and I was afraid about changing to a touch screen reader but the touch screen is very good. I love it. My main reading time is when I go to bed, so I have always wanted a lighted eReader.

Wow really? That's interesting. I wish I had bought the Aura over the PW. I do love reading on my Nexus 7.2 though, I think the screen is brilliant. Is the eink on the Kobo nice and dark? I noticed they have it ship to store at Best Buy.

Great, glad to hear you are enjoying your new ereader. I tend to read most often in bed too, but I wasn't sure just how much I'd get from the in-built light. However, although I mainly have the light set quite low, I really love lighted screen now. And when I switch back to my older ereaders for any reason, I immediately yearn for superior screen on the PW. I thought I'd really miss the page turn buttons too, but the touch screen is so responsive that I don't really miss them at all.

I like the idea of light sensor, however I would like to maintain control over the lighting, in other words I will be able to over ride the reader if I think it is necessary. What information is available about the light sensing ability?

Eventually there will be. If this thread keeps going for another 4 or 5 months then the real rumors will start to surface.
