@Connallmac what an extraordinary review statement!!!

The Christian sentiments tells one far more about the review writer than the book they're supposedly reviewing, eh!

I haven't read this author but came across it while browsing and it was the right price for this thread.

The English reviews posted with the synopsis tell a different story - and I suggest that their credibility far outweighs the drongo who wrote the Amazon review.

I just installed the Win 8 app and logged it into my Kobo account and sure enough the book appeared in my account. Was able to download an Adobre DRM'd copy from my library on the website just fine. As far as I know this offer is US only.
Thanks, I think. This only took three days of downloading a windows update (which finally finished only by going to a bookstore with faster internet access), then the app (which then required changing credentials on the PC to the Microsoft site credentials - thanks, Kobo, as I've had a network for over 2 decades and didn't want to do this, ever, really, and now must figure out how to undo it, so the machine isn't an oddball login), and then I ended up with both the free book AND a worthless preview of it both in my library.

ETA: In any case, even though the offer is missing from the Kobo homepage just now, the offer is still working.

I'm about in the same boat. I had a VirtualBox image with a preview of Windows 8 from where I claimed a similar offer from the Nook app... I booted it up and when I attempted to download the Kobo app, it told me I needed to update to Windows 8.1... I downloaded the trial image last week, but haven't loaded it to a VM yet.

I'm about 30% of the way through it, and it's interesting. The only issue I've had so far is the inability of my Kindle on board dictionary to deal with Scottish vocabulary and spellings.

Doctor Syn from B&N

I've just noticed that B&N have a Nook version of the complete Doctor Syn stories for $0.99.

Two points worth noting: the author's name is misspelled as "Thorndyke" (rather than Thorndike) and while the author always used to spell out "Doctor" in full in the book's titles, it appears here as "Dr".

This may be a permanent price, but it was nevertheless a surprise to me as most of the six titles included don't seem to be available separately.

The books aren't at all politically correct (unless these ones have been revised from the original printed text) but they will appeal to any reader who likes the odd bit of swashbuckling and piracy on the high seas.

Any of you folk who are Pat McIntosh's Gill Cunningham historic murder mystery fans, Amazon are selling this series at 84p for each story:

http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/search/re...qid=1395509655

For those of you in the US the cost is $1.40 at:

http://www.amazon.com/gp/search/ref=...qid=1395509655

I was fortunate to get the first two stories in the series from my county digital library in Norfolk UK and was pleased to find that I could buy the rest of the stories so reasonably.

Angels & Demons by Dan Brown
Quote:
An ancient secret brotherhood.
A devastating new weapon of destruction.
When world-renowned Harvard symbologist Robert Langdon is summoned to a Swiss research facility to analyze a mysterious symbol -- seared into the chest of a murdered physicist -- he discovers evidence of the unimaginable: the resurgence of an ancient secret brotherhood known as the Illuminati...the most powerful underground organization ever to walk the earth. The Illuminati has now surfaced to carry out the final phase of its legendary vendetta against its most hated enemy -- the Catholic Church.
Langdon's worst fears are confirmed on the eve of the Vatican's holy conclave, when a messenger of the Illuminati announces they have hidden an unstoppable time bomb at the very heart of Vatican City. With the countdown under way, Langdon jets to Rome to join forces with Vittoria Vetra, a beautiful and mysterious Italian scientist, to assist the Vatican in a desperate bid for survival.
Embarking on a frantic hunt through sealed crypts, dangerous catacombs, deserted cathedrals, and even the most secretive vault on earth, Langdon and Vetra follow a 400-year-old trail of ancient symbols that snakes across Rome toward the long-forgotten Illuminati lair...a clandestine location that contains the only hope for Vatican salvation.
An explosive international thriller, Angels & Demons careens from enlightening epiphanies to dark truths as the battle between science and religion turns to war.
This price seems to only be available in AmazonUS.

(I know, I know, it's Dan Brown, but it is on sale.)

Devil Bones: A Novel (Temperance Brennan) by Kathy Reichs
Quote:
# 1 international bestselling author Kathy Reichs returns to Charlotte, North Carolina with her eleventh riveting novel in which America’s favorite forensic anthropologist, Temperance Brennan, encounters voodoo, Santeria, Satanism, and a Wiccan in her quest to identify two young victims.

In a house under renovation, a plumber uncovers a cellar no one knew about, and makes a rather grisly discovery—a decapitated chicken, animal bones, and cauldrons containing beads, feathers, and other relics of religious ceremonies. In the center of the shrine, there is the skull of a teenage girl. Meanwhile, on a nearby lakeshore, the headless body of a teenage boy is found by a man walking his dog.

Nothing is clear—neither when the deaths occurred, nor where. Was the skull brought to the cellar or was the girl murdered there? Why is the boy’s body remarkably well preserved? Led by a preacher turned politician, citizen vigilantes blame devil worshippers and Wiccans. They begin a witch-hunt, intent on seeking revenge.

Forensic anthropologist Temperance Brennan—“five-five, feisty, and forty-plus”—is called in to investigate, and a complex and gripping tale unfolds in this, Kathy Reichs’s eleventh taut, always surprising, scientifically fascinating mystery.

With a popular series on Fox, Kathy Reichs has established herself as the dominant talent in forensic mystery writing. Devil Bones features Reichs’s signature blend of forensic descriptions that “chill to the bone” (Entertainment Weekly) and the surprising plot twists that have made her books phenomenal bestsellers in the United States and around the world.

What Angels Fear: A Sebastian St. Cyr Mystery by C.S. Harris
Quote:
It's 1811, and the threat of revolution haunts the upper classes of King George III's England. Then a beautiful young woman is found savagely murdered on the altar steps of an ancient church near Westminster Abbey. A dueling pistol found at the scene and the damning testimony of a witness both point to one man-Sebastian St. Cyr, Viscount Devlin, a brilliant young nobleman shattered by his experience in the Napoleonic Wars.
