Thanks again - that seemed to work fine.
tail -f /var/log/messages did not work on lubuntu, but a forum suggested trying tail -f /var/log/syslog which gave me the following:- office@office-desktop:~$ tail -f /var/log/syslog Mar 22 01:10:14 office-desktop udisksd[1365]: Mounted /dev/sdb6 at /media/office/06841146-0c21-4589-96b8-d7397f4506b4 on behalf of uid 1000 Mar 22 01:10:24 office-desktop kernel: [ 241.875134] EXT4-fs (sdb5): warning: maximal mount count reached, running e2fsck is recommended Mar 22 01:10:25 office-desktop kernel: [ 242.935358] EXT4-fs (sdb5): 2 orphan inodes deleted Mar 22 01:10:25 office-desktop kernel: [ 242.935365] EXT4-fs (sdb5): recovery complete Mar 22 01:10:26 office-desktop kernel: [ 244.121331] EXT4-fs (sdb5): mounted filesystem with ordered data mode. Before I go on to making a back up copy of this disc, it would be great if someone could confirm that I am on the right track so far. Thanks, Roberto. |

I didn't see it at first, but I looked again after a little sleep.
dd if=/dev/sdb of=./vox_image.bin bs=512 dd if=./vox-image.bin of=/dev/sdb bs=512 Note that in the first command (where we created the file), the name is "vox_image.bin" and in the second (where we're trying to use it), it's "vox-image.bin". I've updated my original instructions, but you just need to change the second command to: dd if=./vox_image.bin of=/dev/sdb bs=512 and it should work fine. You should be able to pick up right at that point. Last edited by Difflugia; 03-25-2014 at 10:54 AM. |

Hi Guys - Sorry, it is me again. I feel as though I am nearly there. Looks like I have successfully created the image to the new card, but have got this message:-

Is it the same sort of problem that I had previously, with it being in a different location? Do I need to recreate it? Thanks, Roberto. |

That means that it can't find the file "update-rooted.zip" in the current directory. I've looked through the instructions hoping that I made the same sort of mistake that I made before and if I did, I don't see it. You're close to being done, though, and recreating the zip file is probably the easiest way to make sure that it works.
First, based on your comments, it looks like your home directory is "/home/office". If you enter the "pwd" command, the response should be "/home/office". If that's the case, check to make sure that the update directory is there. Enter the command "ls -ald update". You should see something that looks very similar to this: Code:
drwxr-xr-x 5 bowz users 4096 Mar 19 15:51 update Code:
ls: cannot access update: No such file or directory Code:
cd update zip -r9 ../update-rooted.zip . cd .. Code:
-rw-r--r-- 1 bowz users 171558652 Jan 19 18:21 update-rooted.zip Code:
ls: cannot access update-rooted.zip: No such file or directory You're almost there! |

Hi Difflugia, tried it and here is the result. Again, I picked up from where I left off, but was unsure about unmounting etc., so did not do that.

In the file path /home/office/vox there is a file called update zip if that helps. Roberto. |

The update directory is empty (the "nothing to do" is telling you that there are no files to add to the zip). That means that something in "Preparing the Files" failed. At this point, it's probably easier for you to redo that section than for me to troubleshoot what exactly went wrong (you should just need to do that section, though... you shouldn't need to redo the backup). When that section's done and you try doing the zip command, the output should be a stack of files being added to the update-rooted.zip.
When I get some time, I'll redo that section and capture the output. I'll post it so you can check for differences that might indicate errors. |

Hi Guys. First off, a big thankyou to you all for your help so far. I followed your advice and it has worked up to a point. The rooted zip has installed, but I have stuffed up somewhere on the partitioning side. I know this because I have successfully put in my 16GB Sandisk card and did a factory restart and now have a brand new looking kobo vox with the superuser app on the apps page, which opens. However, the settings shows that the internal SD card has no memory, and I cannot download apps onto the kobo. I have put the old one back in and everything works fine. What would be the best way (commands)to get the necessary information on the terminal screen to post so you can see which bit I have gotten wrong? At this point:-
Enter "n" to create a new partition. Enter "e" to create an extended partition. Then enter partition number 3. Hit enter to select the default first sector and type "+4G" (for four gigabytes) for the last sector. ,did I do the right thing in typing +4G immediately after the default sector line and then hit return to get to the last sector? A line or two after that, I got an out of range message. I know I am nearly at the end of this, and can't believe I have even gotten this far. Cheers, Roberto. |

Don't know if I have done the right thing or not, but I have deleted partitions 6-3, and tried to start from that point. Have tried writing +4G after the first sector, but eventually I get a line saying out of range. Get a different error message when typing it after the next line for last sector. Also now seem to have lost partition 6 as an automatic option. Below is one of a few attempts.

Me again. I have started from scratch and stopped before expanding to 16Gb, and have now successfully rooted my Kobo and have 8Gb of memory. Thanks for all of your help. I did try Gparted on Lubuntu as an alternative form of expanding, but was equally unsuccessful. If anyone can give me some pointers on this last stage, using any method, I would be more than happy to take apart my Kobo again to complete this job.
Thanks, Roberto. |

Hi, me again. Have now successfully rooted two kobo vox's but still have not been able to expand the partitions to 16Gb. I am sure I am doing something wrong at the creating new partition stage in terms of size allocation. Any pointers? Is there a youtube tutorial or something similar that I have not found yet? Cheers,
Roberto. |

Hi Guys. Not to worry. Having spent a very worthwhile weekend learning how to use Gparted properly, i have finally expanded my SD card. Thank you all so much for your help, it has been a fantastic learning experience. I have just fallen at the last small hurdle now. I have very limited Superuser options (updates/temp unroot and OTA survival) - which boxes should be ticked to get it to work? a fail message came up the first time I tried to run it and the Google update app did not work, so in the end I just started the whole SD card process from scratch, to begin with an unused superuser account without permissions. Do I need to install the google app fixer? When I install busybox or Connectbot etc, I used to get a root access permission request, which allowed them to work, but now i don't and they do not seem to be installed properly. Any ideas/ Cheers, Roberto.
