I've never had my Nexus 7 (2013) crash either. YMMV. I think the current version of Android along with some of the Nexus tablets and premium tablets from makers like Samsung are pretty much on par, in terms of performance, with Apple products. I say this as someone who only owned iPods for a long time and kept her iTouch 3rd generation until last year because her first Android phone was so horrible. I will say that the diversity in the Android world does lead to some duds but I don't think the entire Android market should be painted with the "low quality, unreliable" brush.

I must have had a good 3. Mine is two years old, it's never had a problem and hubby uses it for games now and is perfectly happy with it.

I certainly wouldn't consider the 3rd gen iPad to be "botched" at all. I've had once since it was released, and use it daily to read academic PDFs. Excellent device.

I suspect that the reason the iPad 4 is now the base model is because it was the first one to use the "Lightning" connector.

Be happy with your iPad. I'm not trying to convince anyone that they shouldn't be.

The reason the iPad 4 is now the base model is because the iPad 3 (a) has been out of production for over a year and (b) was an interim release for a variety of reasons.

My daughter uses my old 3...no problems. It's basically a "netflix viewer" for now. Happy with my iPad Air. My mom is still happy with her iPad 2. My wife and other daughter are happy with their iPad mini originals.

One of iOS7's improvements is faster animation times, which impact the speed of the iPad's GUI significantly.

You probably know this already, Tubemonk, but Nexus 7 owners can enjoy similar improvements by setting animations to half their current speed in the Developer Options menu.

For those who don't know: under Settings > Developer Options, scroll down and set all of these to 0.5x: Window animation scale, Transition animation scale and Animator duration scale.

Whenever I finally get around to buying an iPad, it likely will be the Mini Retina or the Air, but I'll be watching the pricing of the iPad 4 as well.

I held off installing 7.x until 7.0.6 (with the fix for the SSL bug). 7.1 is better than 7.0.6 but not as good as 6.1.3.

Agree on the iPad 4. Bought one when they released a 128GB version and it's still my favorite iPad. Still running 6.1.3 on mine, though.
