Kobo page number inconsistent.

Hi folks,

Anyone knows why the page count is displayed inconsistent? For example when reading it would update the page count with something like this:

Page 1
Page 1
Page 1
Page 2
Page 2
Page 3
Page 3
Page 3

I don't understand why the repeated number, is there a way to fix it?

If possible we need more info.

What format books (ePubs or Kobo ePubs).
What page number are you referring to

Epubs, not Kobo Epubs.

I mean the page count on the bottom of the screen.

Like page 1 of 500.

It does not represent the number of pages I turn when tapping the screen.

All page numbering on ereaders is like that. Depending on what size font you use, you could change a 100-page book into 1000 pages. The reader will still see and count only 100 pages (as it should) and will break up your reading screens into smaller sections of each page. Pages are probably counted by xxx words = 1 page.

So that's why you can change pages and still be on page 1 for 3 page flips (or 10 page flips, again depending on your font size). I much prefer the current system and to not inflate the book's pages artificially to 10x what it really is.

There is an option in settings to turn on a slightly different page numbering system, where it shows the page numbers in the margin. I never use it because it always places it on top of text and is annoying to me. The numbers might be slightly different than the page number shown at the bottom, but it will be close.

With e-pubs a "page" is considered approximately 1024 characters (I say approximately because it's 1024 based on compressed file size not the raw data and there is also differences in compression so even that isn't always exactly the same). If you turn on page numbers in the options (as Ripplinger suggested) you'll see the small page numbers at the right side of the page and you'll see that it varies up and down the page (or may not show up on a given "page"). This will stay in the same spot in the text (or very close -- might move depending where the sentence breaks to the next line) regardless of what font size you use. Kepubs on the other hand use a displayed "page" of text as it's "page" so if you change the font size the number of pages will change and a page number may not relate at all to the same text (depending on chapter and font sizes).
Poke around the forums and there are a couple of tweaks that may let you change this or use calibre to change you e-pub to a kepub to get screen page numbering (although it does also change other aspects of the display as well).

As far as I've been able to tell, the page number at the bottom of the screen is the page number for text at the top of the screen. If you see page 134 in the middle of the screen, the page break is located on that line so the page number at the bottom will remain at 133. The page number at the bottom of the screen will update to 134 when you move to the next display screen unless a page break gets invoked such as moving to a new chapter.

Regards,
David

I have the problem where on quite a few kepubs the page number only changes each chapter.

With sideloaded books, the page number displayed is based on 1000 (or 1024) characters.

If the book has special tags for the page number breaks, then the actual page number breaks will be displayed on the right margin, provided that you have enabled this feature in the reader.

A bug in the current Glo (and probably others) firmware is that the page numbers will be obscure the text if the right margin is not wide enough.

Does that include KePUBs sideloaded with Calibre?

Kepubs, no matter the source, use a per-chapter page numbering that changes with font size and other settings. It is a count of the number of screens.

There is an option to change kepubs to per book page numbering. From memory, if this is used, the number of pages doesn't change with font size. I don't know if it uses the Adobe method or something else.

You're wrong on this. Every epub I've seen will show the right margin page break number if it's turned on.

Yeah, I remember seeing that option. Never tried it though. I guess I'm pretty content with the default Kobo scheme.

I'm not wrong, at least as I've worded it. If the epub has the special tags, the actual page numbers will be shown. If it doesn't have the special tags, then the calculated page number will be shown.

Yes, that's correct. The way it was written originally would lead one to think that the number on the side only shows up IF there was a special tag. Actually, when I think about it I don't know that Kobo would display the special tags or not .
