I just finished reading Replay by Ken Grimwood. I rated it 3.5 of 5 stars on LibraryThing. This was an interesting story. I kept thinking what I would do in the main characters situation. I usually didn't want to put it down. Although it was slow in a few places. |

I'm reading John Saturnall's Feast by Lawrence Norfolk. I starting reading it on the plane back from a brief vacation (I bought a remaindered hardcover at the Harvard bookstore) but had to hit the ground running when I got back to work and had various other life traumas going on, so my mind hasn't been quiet enough to really read but I'm going to try and delve back into it this evening. I did like the bit I read and am curious to see where the story goes.

Finished "Dark Invasion" by Howard Blum. Aside from a bit of purple prose, the writing was decent and the content was interesting - organized sabotage by the German government against American munition shipments to the Allies in 1915, including bio-war.

I've barely read thirty pages in the last week. An idea for a novel of my own clobbered me last Thursday, and I've been spending my leisure time making notes and refining that idea. (I've got over 7200 words of outline and background written...)

I started on The Analyst by John Katzenbach. I'm pretty sure it got to my reading list from this thread. So far, so good.

I'm back on familiar turf again with The Case of the Horrified Heirs by Erle Stanley Garner. It's one of the later Perry Mason books, written after Gardner had cleaned up Mason's act and made him respectable.

Just got done with The Obsidian Pebble by Rhys A. Jones, the first in a new children's adventure series with a tinge of fantasy/science fiction about it. It's pretty clearly aimed at the 9-12 range (or middle grade), but to me, it fit well into that fortunate group of children's books that work well also for older readers (or at least for this particular older reader), with more character depth and roundedness than many adventure books for kids in this age range tend to have. Anyway, I enjoyed it a great deal and I'll be looking forward to the next book, whenever it comes out. |

Finished Non-Stop by Brian Aldiss. My first Aldiss and it was a pleasant read. A typical 1950s Sci-Fi with the usual stereotypes. A unique setting for its time now often copied. A few interesting human reactions to their changing environment. An element of mystery was a plus and certainly kept my attention. Solid C [3 stars]. |

Then I read Lightspeed Magazine #46, March 2014, which was also good. I particularly enjoyed the novella by Jo Walton, but the other stories in there were of a good standard. Now I just have to catch up on the 44 unread back issues I now have from their Kickstarter. (I read the first issue some time ago.) And now I'm reading Like a Mighty Army by David Weber, the latest in his Safehold series.

I finished up Star Trek: No Time Like The Past by Greg Cox. It was a really fun book which had Voyager's Seven of Nine going back in time to the original Enterprise. I've decided to read D is for Deadbeat by Sue Grafton next to continue with the Kinsey Millhone series. Have been enjoying this series a lot! |

Just finished "Before They Are Hanged", the second book in Joe Abercrombie's "First Law" trilogy. Very good fantasy, although very dark in its atmosphere. If you're a fantasy fan and haven't given this trilogy a go, you really should do so.

Hey!! Let's get some action going! What are we reading?

Just finished The Three Musketeers. Wow. Like Dumas' other novel The Count of Monte Cristo, The Three Musketeers is one extremely entertaining novel. I very much enjoyed the plot. Lots of swordplay and adventure from start to finish and there was never a dull moment. I loved all the characters, even the evil femme fatale, Milady de Winter. The first part of the story is cheerful in a sense and comedic, however, the tone of the novel in the second part and towards the end changes completely and becomes very dark and gloomy. Nevertheless, and as I stated, it was a very captivating read. If anyone's looking for a great adventure novel, I heartily recommend The Three Musketeers. Edited to add: Thank you to all who recommended this marvellous novel to me! Last edited by Gazella; 03-15-2014 at 07:49 AM. |
