Having cleared the ice sheets from the driveway I am now defrosting a couple of chicken breasts for dinner.

I found out today that British stand-up comedian Bill Bailey will perform in Amsterdam on May 14, tickets go on sale on Friday! I've no idea how popular he is in the Netherlands but I hope to get tickets.

Almost exactly ten years before his Dutch show I went to see his Part Troll show in Birmingham, on either May 11 or May 12.

I do like Bill Bailey a lot as well. A good musician as well as a comedian. I hope you manage to get tickets.

Have you seen him in Black Books? One of my favorite comedy series (also features Dylan Moran).

Yes, I have the dvd box set.
I love UK stand up comedy and hope more comedians will come to the Netherlands, at the top of my wishlist to see is, as my father calls him, that crazy Scot Billy Connolly.

Right now I'm recuperating. I just spent the afternoon (and then some) replacing our nine (hard-wired, AC powered, interconnected) smoke detectors. They're all ceiling mounted, and they all required new wiring harnesses and bases. The wiring is short, so there was a lot of reaching, stretching, and putting things together without really being able to see them.

But, everything powered up okay, the battery back-ups are working, they all tested good and when any one unit alarmed it triggered them all, so I think I'm done.

I did that same thing with my 6 smoke detectors a month ago. Such fun, isn't it? But maybe I won't have so many false alarms now.

I'm hoping it has a preventative effect. Now that I have a network of good smoke detectors, maybe we won't have a fire.

I don't have smoke detectors in my house at all. How many should you have and in what locations? By the way, I am serious, I don't have smoke alarms installed.

When we moved into our house, a little more than 20 years ago, we made an addition and had to bring the smoke detectors up to the current code for new construction. This called for one smoke detector on every floor (in our case, since we live in a split-level, this meant twice as many as you'd expect, plus one for the attic that we turned into a new room) plus one for every bedroom. They are AC powered (so they keep working if the home owner neglects to replace a bad battery) with battery back-up (in case the fire occurs during a power failure), and all interconnected (so if the one in the basement senses smoke the ones in the bedrooms will go off and wake every one up). This is the current code in the US, as far as I know. You can read details here:

It's not about money or anything really. Where I come from, smoke detectors are very uncommon in homes. They are required in public buildings though. Unlike in the US, the fire codes and standards here do not mandate the installation of smoke alarms in houses. Also, houses here are all made of either stone or concrete, so they're less flammable. That's why I never really thought of having smoke alarms until I read your post. I'm sure it'll be mandatory in the next couple of years. Thank you for the link!

here in WA State it is now also a requirement to have co detectors if the house has an attached garage or a fireplace
