@Rev. Bob: added to unconfirmed
@chief84: second bug added as unconfirmed. First one is not a Kobo bug, as already said. I do not know if you have to install the Kepub plugin, try it. Ohterwise, ask to Calibre dev, if you're lucky he could be in a good mood.

@ableeker: it can't be a problem of allowing ip address, otherwise his connection would never worked.

@ableeker: it worked fine before the 3.x firmware revisions. For the record, it's the Verizon FiOS Actiontec router.

Hi all,

I'm a not so happy user of kobo glo (from FNAC in France) so far. The device seems very nice, and out of the box it read epub and cbz, that that's for the good points, with a good screen and integrated light. However, I've had a lot of stability problems with my device, so I'd like to find out if it's my hardware of maybe software related.

I really don;t like the principle that you have to register to be able to use the device, anyway I did register since there was no choice, then it also upgrades the firmware and gives the user no choice to refuse the upgrade.

That was about a month ago. I installed a few ebooks (epub) and manga (cbz format), the interface is fine, but quite randomly , the device seems to lock up, in this case I have to use a pin and do a manual reset. I finally decided to do a factory reset, thinking that maybe Calibre somehow corrupted the sqlite database (now I set calibre in such a way that it doesn't try to modify this db). At first it seemed to have solved my stabilities issue, but recently another one came : once in a while, after I've turned off the device and let it for a night , I'll find that I can't turn it on anymore, and most of the time the battery is simply empty. It looks like the device actually didn;t go in suspend mode when I turned it off, so it used off the battery during the night (but the screen did display the picture normally displayed when it;s off though, so it;s as if everything went OK except the last step that put the device in suspend)

After this happened several times , which was really annoying, since the device cannot be used for a while after that (need to be recharged), I decided to do again a factory reset, and this time I did a fake register (following instructions from Antoine Amirilli's blog), this allowed me to bypass also the initial firmware upgrade. So I'll see what happens with a non upgraded firmware (the one from factory reset is 2.1.7, I don;t know what was the version after initial upgrade, I didn;t take note of that)

Sorry for the long post, I'd just liked to know if these symptoms are usual or not. Is Kobo Glo nornally a stable device ? Is the software supposed to be reliable ?

I have a couple of books that makes breaking at the end of the line not good, it breaks in the middle of the word.
The mistake is the use of <font>a</font> everywhere.
In Calibre and Sigil the book is displayed correct.

I'd say the creator of this ebook was extremely sloppy. Also keep in mind, that HTML 5 no longer supports the <font> tag and in HTML 4.0.1, using the CSS directives was preferred to separate markup and visual styling. The sloppiness is that the <font> tag is used to specify the font face, font size, and font color of text so a <font> tag without any specifiers is just a waste of space. I'd suggest using either Sigil or Calibre's editor to remove all the <font> and </font> pairs.

Now if we are going to discuss Kobo's habit of allowing breaks at tags, that's a whole different issue despite the specification seeming to indicate that this is allowed.

Regards,
David

Angry

PLS I beg Your pardon if the post is in the wrong place, and for my english!!!

Product: Kobo Glo
Firmware: 2.8.1 and 2.8 and 3.0 and 3.1 and 3.2
Plugins:
File types: epub
Sideloaded or from Kobobooks: sideloaded with Calibre (but also ADE) or direct coping the file from MS Winwows 8.0
On external SD:
Steps to reproduce: not recognised the new book, but they are on the roort
Current result:
Workaround:

I've contacted Caibre, to solve, the Books are fine, Calibre Works fine, the problem is not by this side. (https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1263043)

Some side book that are not recognised.

I discovered that if I change something on author or title (calibre opened and Kobo connected) I discover that there are two books both recognised by (different name or Author, what I've changed) Kobo, But some times it doesn't work

I made a Backup.
I reinstalled previous firmware starting from 2.6 and it works, all recognised,

I've made a backup.
I've installed various firm after 2.6 and the I confirm that the only one that recognise these side books is the 2.6

PLS remark version 3.2 when I disconnect it stop working at 6% and stays as long you wait (also a day!) and I have to make a soft reset every time.

I've also made a complete reset (so aumotacally it installs 3.2) and reinstalled all books with Calibre, one by one but only half of my books that before were on Kobo are recognised also if they are on the root. Idem coping files with MS windows 8.0

To have all books I've restored my backup 2.6 (I tested that is enough to reinstall 2.6)

Do you mean that Kobo (not Calibre) does recognize and open the book as two different books?

@starzig: I also had much problems with firmware stability and in particular with db corruption. I hope devs in future will focus on reliability over new features

That's the easy bit. When calibre sends the book to the device it uses the "Save template" to name the file on the device. The default save template uses the author and title as part of file name. If you send the book, change the title or author and send it again, the file on the device will get a different file name. As far as the device is concerned, they are different books.

That's true; I asked because on Launchpad I read that he can see two books, but with Calibre. It seems strange to me that Kobo recognizes the old copy too.

But of course I've deleted one of doubles with Calibre, disconnected, restored the change in calibre, reconnected and sent to Kobo, that restored the name and remained on Kobo.
Some are archive.org managed by me but I don't remember the titles.
One for sure is MY BOOK (still not published) I'll send, but PLS... I'm in discussion with and editor to publish it...
How can send it?

I agree about the sloppyness, but it is in a lot of these books of the firm we called the central bookhouse who is almost the only distributing point in The Netherlands.
The Sony PRS-T2 has the same problem but they patched it and the PRS-T3 just works fine with it.
I agree there is a lot of not needed code in it, but there are also a very huge amount of people that say.. Sigil ??? ehh I can't open my book ( DRM ) or "what means editing ? "
For me it is no problem, just placed the replace code in the converting part of Calibre and done but we sometimes forget that 90% of the e-book buyers, with all respect, are just struggle to put the books on the reader, and don't understand anything we are saying here.

Well, Kobo should simply ignore the font tag, not wrap the word.
Added as unconfirmed for now.

@fed851: you could add the book to an encrypted archive, upload it to dropbox or something and send me link and password... or you could simply send me some other book

KoboGlo SVG Faults

Product: KoboGlo
Firmware: 3.1.1 and 3.2.0
Plugins: no
File types: epub
Sideloaded or from Kobobooks: sideloaded (but probably both)
On external SD: no
Steps to reproduce: display any epub which contains an svg which includes rotated text or "dx" or "dy"

Current result: none
Workaround: none

Kobo issue ID: EPUB SVG Faults [Incident: 140220-000183]

-O-

Description:
The firmware of the KoboGlo (versions 3.1.1 and 3.2.0) supports most of EPUB, but its rendering of SVG rotated text is corrupt, and it does not support SVG attribute "dy".

KoboGlo renders SVG rotated text as though FontWeight="bold", and with each character facing backwards. Typical code is:

Quote:
<body>
<div class="img">
<svg version="1.1" xmlns="http://www.w3.org/2000/svg"
xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink"
width="100%" height="100%" viewBox="0 0 600 800"
preserveAspectRatio="xMidYMid meet">

<image width="506" height="800" xlink:href="../Images/im03a.jpg" />

<g text-anchor="middle" font-size="35" fill="black"
transform="translate(541 400) rotate(270 0 0)">
<text>
Approaching the Rock of Gibraltar,
</text>
<text y="35">
forty-three days out from England.
</text>
</g>

<rect width="600" height="800"
style="fill:none; stroke:black; stroke-width:1" />

</svg>
</div>
</body>
...where the stylesheet contains:
Quote:
div.img { position:fixed; top:0; left:0; height:100%; width:100%; }
Screenshot koboglo-gib.jpg shows how KoboGlo renders this code.

Most other readers render the vertical text as intended, as shown by the following screenshots:
Kobo 4.9.9738 [Android app] : kobo_4.9.9738-gib.jpg
AldikoPremium 3.0.2 [Android app] : aldiko-gib.jpg
Azardi 27.0 : azardi-gib.jpg
Calibre 1.9 viewer : calibreviewer-gib.jpg
EPUBReader 1.4.2.4 [Firefox extension] : Epubreader-gib.jpg
Kindle 4.1.1 (1813030025) : kindle4-gib.jpg
(kf8 derived from epub by kindlegen 2.9)
Readium 2.13.3 [Chrome browser app] : readium-gib.jpg

The SVG attributes "dx" and "dy" make SVG code more maintainable, by allowing subsequent insertion of row or column entries without recalculation of all following "x" or "y" values. All readers listed above except KoboGlo support SVG "dy". KoboGlo renders SVG tables which use "dy" as an unreadable mess (screenshot koboglow-bsowf.jpg) whereas screenshots kobo_4.9.9738-bsowf.jpg and calibreviewer-bsowf.jpg are typical of the other readers.

-O-

[Kobo] Response Via Email(Prince B) - 03/03/2014:
...We have done some investigations into the matter as well and discovered that the SVG file formats aren't compatible with the Kobo Glo eReader, which you are already aware.

Unfortunately, the Kobo Glo eReader wasn't designed to accommodate such a file format. The Kobo Glo eReader is compatible with XML-based files, but not with XML-based vector image formats for two-dimensional graphics that has support for interactivity and animation. SVG images and their behaviors are defined in XML text files. This means that they can be searched, indexed, scripted, and if needs be, compressed.

With that said, the Kobo Glo eReader doesn't have the capability or capacity to provide that feature at this time. We understand the concern, as well the frustration and we will notify our technical team of this new development.

-O-

Kobo support's answer is polite, but misdirected, inapplicable, and unhelpful. Rotation, "dx" and "dy" are basic SVG rendering functions, and they have nothing to do with interactivity or animation. Support for EPUB2 implies support for all of SVG except interactivity and animation. Note that the Kobo reader app for Android renders "rotated text" and "dy" correctly.

The fault must be in the Kobo hardware's SVG engine, or the utiliztion of it. Kobo must accept that there is a firmware fault, and correct it.

-O-

Test case kgbd.epub is attached.

Kobo's webteams say very simple, you didn't buy the ebook in the kobo store, so there must be a defect during transfer of your book to the e-reader by another party (google books) so it is not a bug.
We know that this isn't true, a defect doesn't add font tags, but they don't consider it as a bug.

"Hi Nick,

Thank you for your response.

@bobb40: Your doc is an epub2 or an epub3? svg tag is supported only in epub3.
If it's an epub3, can you upload the document?
