Thanks for the clarification. I've had my eye on Annals of the Former World for some years but the size of the physical book made me think twice.

I just bought the omnibus, but I plan to read it in digestible bites, :-). It's a bit technical at times, but McPhee is such a great writer that he carries you along. I know that I'll be re-reading this a few times.

The Long Goodbye by Raymond Chandler as the prequel to Benjamin Black's The Black Eyed Blonde, which I just picked up as an audible book.

Just finished Ship of Magic by Robin Hobb. It was fantastic and I am jumping right into Mad Ship.

I finished She Returns From War by Lee Collins, the second of an excellent series of fantasy/monster hunting books!

Next up is the latest Star Trek novel. No Time Like the Past by Greg Cox. It is an epic crossover tale. Seven of Nine meets Captain Kirk!

Glad you are enjoying the read. If you like it enough, there are sequels. I haven't yet read them.

I finished Killing Jesus by Bill O'Reilly and Martin Dugard. I felt the book did a good job explaining what daily life must have been like in Biblical times. It's not a conventional non-fiction book in that much of the material is written in an imagined, novelistic format: "Pilate walked down the hall, worrying about etc." (not a quote from the book)

I just finished this book, really enjoyed it! I've put the author's other books on my wish list (that will be for next month's book buying budget, but the books are not that expensive on Amazon).

I get a lot of good ideas from this thread. I appreciate everyone who posts here.

Before reading Jodi's book, I had just read my first Arthur C. Clarke book, "Time's Eye", the first of the Time Odyssey series. Now the other books in the series are on my wish list...but they cost a little more than Jodi Taylor's books, so they'll be a 'one at a time' thing. Those are "Sunstorm" and "Firstborn". I was able to borrow "Time's Eye" from an e-library, but the others aren't available there yet.

I still very much want Hugh Howey's "Sand" omnibus, too. I really enjoyed the Silo series and I'm looking forward to reading more by this author.

(And then there's Blake Crouch's Wayward Pines series...and Diana Gabaldon may finally have her next Outlander book ready this summer, after ending the last book with a few cliffhangers. I'm a sucker for series.)

I just borrowed "Winter's Tale" from the e-library. DH refuses to suffer through the movie, so he's quite relieved I could obtain the book.

Just finished Never Go Back by Lee Child. And, typically for him, I couldn't put it down. Very fast read!

One thing I didn't understand, he referred to the Fort Myer, Army and Henderson Hall, Marine, base complex as Fort Dyer - Helsington House. He did a book signing at Henderson Hall a few years ago, so why he got it wrong in the book is not clear.

Presumably this was for legal reasons. Real places and organisation might not appreciate their depiction in fiction.

I thought that might be the reason. But then how can authors write about something happening in, for example, the White House? Or, in the case of this book, Arlington Cemetary?

For that, you'd have to consult a lawyer. If I was to guess, it would be to do with what was depicted, and how likely it was to be obviously fictional.

Degree of accuracy is also relevant. Being too close is a security risk, and the military really hates that.

I'm glad you liked it. I really enjoyed it myself (except for the four-year gap) and I'm also going to read the other ones in the series. So far, Kobo doesn't seem to have the second one available. I'll wait a little and buy it from Amazon if it doesn't show up at Kobo.
