Often when I'm in doubt of the spelling or exact definition of a word, rather than rely on my browser's spell-check I'll submit the word in question to Google's search engine. It's pretty good at suggesting alternatives.

That's a good method, and I use it often. I also have a dictionary installed that will allow me letter-by-letter entries... If I go astray as I enter the word, it stops showing possibilities. You'd be amazed at how often I can befuddle the best of checkers or even Google. I'm the guy who still thinks 'ghoti' should be the spelling for fish...

What do you do when you are looking for a certain word that you know exactly defines what you are trying to say, but no matter how you rack your brain it refuses to appear?

Stop thinking about it and then it eventually pops up out of the antiquated filing system in my brain.

I was a lecturer for a Mental Development training seminar for several years in which we taught a specific technique to deal with this. It seems to work about 98% of the time. The other 2% I just make up a word...

Sign me up for the next class. Few things are more frustrating.

A while ago I wanted to say "Book Publisher Thinks of themselves as custodians of authors and their writings". But off course "custodians" refused to appear, and I couldn't really substitute it with janitors or handyman.

A man received the following text from his neighbour:

I am so sorry Bob. I've been riddled with guilt and I have to confess. I have been tapping your wife, day and night when you're not around. I'm not getting any at home, but that's no excuse. I can no longer live with the guilt and I hope you will accept my sincerest apology with my promise that it won't happen again.

The man, anguished and betrayed, went into his bedroom, grabbed his gun, and without a word, shot his wife and killed her.

A few moments later, a second text came in:

Damn autocorrect - "wifi", not "wife".
