It's the data that you're protecting, not just the Kindle itself. If I dropped and broke my Kindle while I was away on holiday it would be a disaster.

But that you have to have a plan for anyway since it can be stolen, you can forget it and so on. And I assume you have a phone with the Kindle app so why would it be a disaster?

I have butter-fingers and drop my phone at least once a week, and have dropped my Kindle at least a half dozen times in the last year. Both have a case, neither has broken. |

I also get the impression that the Kindles nowadays is much more robust and do not break so often when you drop them. But I have really not tested that empirically. |

I'm digging on all the side "button" rumors. Not really buttons, but sides that are pressure sensitive to finger taps similar to how touch screens are.
As for the weight, although lighter is always better, that really is no longer an issue. As it is, if my Paperwhite were 8 ounces lighter, I'd have to find some way to tie a string to it. |

I should have said finger squeezes. There are a number of sites that have leaked that information. Of course, that doesn't mean it's true, but if it isn't, a lot of people are going to have egg on their faces.

There's also the day-to-day annoyance of putting up with a scratched screen even if your e-reader is still usable -- I'm willing to pay a few shekels to avoid that. I wouldn't be surprised if $60 Kindle owners felt the same way. Keeping the screen clear and the exoskeleton intact means using the same e-reader for years if you can resist the urge to upgrade, which means spending less over time. Personally, I tend to buy new devices only after several enhancements and not just one or two. Last edited by Prestidigitweeze; 03-10-2014 at 12:26 AM. |

I bought a $20 case from Etsy and it works for both my Kindles. Although I have been using the Paperwhite without one. I too would rather save the money.
I'm not very happy with the excess ghosting on my 2nd gen. I would like to see that tackled a lot better in the 3rd. |

The eInk "Carta" screen that the PW2 uses has significantly less ghosting than the Pearl screen used by earlier models. It's one of the main improvements in it.

Really? Well, it's not a problem when I'm reading, but when I'm using the launcher and all the menus, it happens a lot. Amazes me that Amazon even uses more black in the Kindle UI now. Maybe I notice it more because of the light?
