It's the data that you're protecting, not just the Kindle itself. If I dropped and broke my Kindle while I was away on holiday it would be a disaster.

I really agree with this. I think the PW weight is just right.

But that you have to have a plan for anyway since it can be stolen, you can forget it and so on. And I assume you have a phone with the Kindle app so why would it be a disaster?

You can't plan for every possible scenario, but you can defend yourself against the most likely thing that can happen. It's far more likely I'm going to drop something than it is that I will be mugged.

I have butter-fingers and drop my phone at least once a week, and have dropped my Kindle at least a half dozen times in the last year. Both have a case, neither has broken.

Well, I nearly never drop things. Or maybe just once per year. And then it is much more rational not to use a case and just use your backup plan for theft if you should happen to drop it and it breaks.

I also get the impression that the Kindles nowadays is much more robust and do not break so often when you drop them. But I have really not tested that empirically.

I'm digging on all the side "button" rumors. Not really buttons, but sides that are pressure sensitive to finger taps similar to how touch screens are.

As for the weight, although lighter is always better, that really is no longer an issue. As it is, if my Paperwhite were 8 ounces lighter, I'd have to find some way to tie a string to it.

True, I guess I was assuming that with every purchased book on Amazon's servers, and every sideloaded book in Calibre as well as Amazon Prime, you wouldn't feel the need for both belt and suspenders.

I should have said finger squeezes. There are a number of sites that have leaked that information. Of course, that doesn't mean it's true, but if it isn't, a lot of people are going to have egg on their faces.

Funny comment, but the Kindle Paperwhite 2 can be as expensive as $189. Since I hate ads, I'd have to buy the $139 model at the very least. And since reasonable cases can be bought for $10-15, the investment begins to look at wee tad saner for more expensive models.

There's also the day-to-day annoyance of putting up with a scratched screen even if your e-reader is still usable -- I'm willing to pay a few shekels to avoid that. I wouldn't be surprised if $60 Kindle owners felt the same way.

Keeping the screen clear and the exoskeleton intact means using the same e-reader for years if you can resist the urge to upgrade, which means spending less over time.

Personally, I tend to buy new devices only after several enhancements and not just one or two.

Hey, I'm as guilty as the next gadget freak. I purchase expensive covers to all my e-Readers and tablets. It just happened to dawn on me when writing that post, since I was looking at Amazon's HP that they are now selling basic Kindle for almost the same price I payed for my first Kindle cover.

Personally I haven't spent more than $10 on a case, I'd rather spend the $$$ on books.

I bought a $20 case from Etsy and it works for both my Kindles. Although I have been using the Paperwhite without one. I too would rather save the money.

I'm not very happy with the excess ghosting on my 2nd gen. I would like to see that tackled a lot better in the 3rd.

The eInk "Carta" screen that the PW2 uses has significantly less ghosting than the Pearl screen used by earlier models. It's one of the main improvements in it.

Really? Well, it's not a problem when I'm reading, but when I'm using the launcher and all the menus, it happens a lot. Amazes me that Amazon even uses more black in the Kindle UI now. Maybe I notice it more because of the light?
