They look a lot like pinto beans -- kind of blotchy -- but they're a bit bigger, with a firmer texture and a slightly different taste.

Sometimes I use black beans, sometimes kidney beans, it makes it a little different from a completely canned chili.

I just had Meiji Coffee Beat Chocolates brought over by my sister, and it tastes really, really good. Looking at the package it says it's a product from Japan. I would definitely start looking for more of this, and as a second option, I'd have the espresso booster instead.

What are 'proper pancakes' like? Thicker? Larger diameter? More or less 'cake-like?' Is there a different recipe for the batter? When my wife makes them, it's ONE LARGE thing about an inch thick that fills the entire frying pan! I always make the little 3"x 1/4" things.

Like French Crepes, but a little bit thicker. The full size of your frying pan (so 20cm/8" diameter or so) but no more than about 1mm thick. (So it's essential that the batter isn't too thick.)

Quick to make and cook, and delicious. When I do a lot, I work with three frying pans on the go at once!


As usual for my lunch: a sandwich and an apple, with a can of Coke Zero.

Yes, very much like a crepe. And you can have it with sugar (and lemon, amongst many other things. My middle daughter had hers with Nutella. Yeuch!)

Crepe have become a very popular street food here, with night-time vendor carts set up all over town. They sell them with a choice of about 20 different fillings, from bananas and chocolate syrup or strawberries and cream, Nutella, mixed fruit, etc. to savory Thai fillings. Not a bad snack as one walks along!
