It would have made me worry more if Google had said they wanted the experience of using Chrome itself to be like that of using Windows. And at this point, I'd never buy a laptop without an IPS panel or newer screen tech with equally good viewing angles. Has anyone ever managed to use a laptop without ever having to show things on it to other people? No reason for my grillfiend and I to have to maintain our positions rigidly in the prime viewing spot for 120 minutes just to watch a flick on vacation. I hate those, too, but having to grill a fiend on the bed while trying to watch a film on a TN panel is especially inconvenient.

Ahh, the pursuit of convenience, no matter what the endeavour. I concur, I concur.

The pawn shop ads may not be working too well, looks like MSFT is feeling the heat...

Some new announcements from Samsung.

I'm not particularly fond of the fake leather back, and I'd rather have a Haswell CPU, but it's good to see higher res screens and 4GB RAM. |

These things are getting spendy. Do they have IPS displays?

I did see where MS may have a FREE version of Win 8.1. Chrome OS is indeed a world mover! Microsoft experimenting with free version of Windows 8.1 By Tom Warren on February 28, 2014 08:17 am "Microsoft is currently experimenting with a free version of Windows 8.1 that could boost the number of people using the operating system. Sources familiar with Microsoft’s plans tell The Verge that the company is building "Windows 8.1 with Bing," a version that will bundle key Microsoft apps and services. While early versions of the software have leaked online, we understand that Windows 8.1 with Bing is an experimental project that aims to bring a low-cost version of Windows to consumers. ZDNet first reported some Windows 8.1 with Bing details earlier this week. "Designed as a free or low-cost upgrade for Windows 7 users" We’re told that Microsoft is aiming to position Windows 8.1 with Bing as a free or low-cost upgrade for Windows 7 users." Free!!! |

The new Samsung Chromebooks aren't IPS.
Current $259 New and Better $319 8 hours New and Best $400 13.3 and better resolution, but no IPS. 8 1/2hours. They use the ARM octa cpu but two different versions. Note, I might have the 8 and 8 1/2 switched above. |

I actually prefer the matte screen of my Samsung to the glossy IPS screens, so I'm happy with this.
For me, the upgrades hit exactly the right notes, with the possible exception of the faux leather case. The current Samsung Chromebook is the most enjoyable laptop I've ever owned - light, hassle-free, silent, 6 hour battery life, pretty much instant on - but it is a little slow when compared to my Chromebox and having the USB ports round the back is daft. So, by doubling the RAM, speeding up the processor, extending the battery life by another few hours, and moving the USB ports to the sides on the new model, I think Samsung have nailed it. Graham |

Outside of audiobooks, I'm quite happy with my Acer C720. It's my living room PC and for occasional trips to family and friends.
$250 is my upper limit for a Chrome device. The other Chromebooks offer nothing to me to warrant charging higher prices. While the fake black leather seems a bit strange on a laptop, at least it's not that glossy white chrome-plated stuff Samsung is obsessed with. |
