I was a mother's nightmare when I grew up! The only thing I can do, though, is decorating a room... At least, I am very satisfied with the result...It is very possible. I only visualize when I'm reading a novel. Otherwise I just see words (a series of letters) |

I visualise in my head. So that's the character's appearance, the scenery etc. if I'm reading and haven't formed a picture I'll go back and re-read a paragraph until I've got a mental picture.

That's quite interesting about decorating, colour schemes etc not necessarily being linked to how visual your reading experience is. I just figured that someone with a very visual brain would automatically transfer that to everything else, but perhaps not.... although I guess being able to visualise how a room would look a certain way or a certain colour doesn't mean you'll be able to tell if it matches or is well designed!

I get picture in my mind of what the characters look like. If see a screen adaptation before reading the book(s), that adaptation will influence me as I read, but not completely. For example, I'm a fan of Erle Stanley Gardner's Perry Mason books. Having seen most of the shows before coming to the books, it's hard to read the Perry Mason novels without seeing Raymond Burr speaking all of Perry's Lines. But although I loved the actors on the TV show, I picture Della Street as a tad more glamorous than Barbara Hale, Paul Drake a lot lankier and much more ordinary looking than William Hopper, Hamilton Burger as very little like William Talman, and Lt. Arthur Tragg as nothing at all like Ray Collins (though I loved Collins in the role).

Reading books before seeing the movie or TV show usually makes me angry that the book or TV show got everything wrong. Comic strips in the paper are a prime example. Growing up, I always had a clear knowledge of what the Peanuts characters sounded like. Then along came the TV shows and the voices of the characters were a lot less sassy than I had heard them in my mind. I guess this post rather dates me.

Interesting thread, thanks for sharing your responses.

I visualize the characters and settings to some extent when I read narrative works such as novels. Words in isolation are not nearly as likely to evoke images. I don't mind if a movie adaptation has a character looking different from how I had imagined. |

I also just realized that I do not pay any attention to the words of a song. I only like the words in a song in the context of how they sound and blend with the music. I rarely know the words to my favorites songs.

I am just the opposite. I find it very difficult to recall music that I can't link with words, or sometimes with images, in the case of movie music.

I wonder if visualizing when reading has anything to do with reading speed? When I read fast, I do not visualize. But when I slow down (usually because I am really enjoying a book), the images come without conscious effort on my part. It only happens when I am really enjoying a book and slow down on purpose to savor it. There is another thread about purposely slowing down one's reading, which got me to pay attention to my own reading styles. Anyway, I usually read quite fast, and I don't visualize. But when I purposely slow down, I do visualize.
