Beautiful little rabbit!
My husband talks about when he was young, during WWII...his father kept rabbits in L.A., but not as pets. They were a meat substitute as beef was scarce as hens teeth.

I wouldn't have a cat where we currently live, so close to the National Park, due to concerns with vulnerable wildlife (turkeys, other birds, marsupials, lizards), but I'd otherwise not have been averse to always having a cat (Homer was...is a brilliantly affectionate fella. We left him with neighbours in Sydney, for the above "wildlife" reason).

I'd like a rat, or rats, but our terriers and rats would not be a very workable combination. Alternatively, I'd love to know enough about reptiles and be licensed to be the wildlife rescue foster for injured locals.

My ideal pet-loving setup is some small property in the hinterland, three dogs (two Airedale Terriers and probably a Westie), a donkey, a cow, chickens, and a rescue reptile house.

Cheers,
Marc (...and the Loved One would have aquariums everywhere in the house)
I'm with your Loved One........seriously considering getting one here. Husband wants a large one....The cat should have a ball with that........

Would I look slightly intellectual if I said that "Homer" was, naturally, named after the famous Greek poet...or would I look like a liar? Now let's see, I've also got "Maggie", and previously had "Monty". I wonder how credible by "Greek poet" story is looking now?

We didn't get to name "Oscar", as he's a rescue/surrender/re-homing. Otherwise, the next boy dog was "Zoidberg" and the next girl, "Leela".

Make sure you have a video camera running on it at all times - that stuff's a money tree for "Funniest Home Video" shows.

I've always liked the freshwater red oscar cychlids, for fish, (and, naturally, Axolotls) but the Loved One would go for a big marine tank, no doubt. I don't think he'd be happy until he had a shark in there, but otherwise he's always wanted blue tangs (well before Finding Nemo and Ellen made them "famous") and chaetodons.

Cheers,
Marc

And here is yet another reason why I am a cat person. For the last two hours, Jon-Jon has been "singing" to us. He has a very melodic trilling sound that he makes, and he loves to sing for an hour or two every night before bed.

One of these nights I am going to have to make an audio recording of it. It is beautiful. Having said that, it's the one reason I cannot let him get into the master bedroom, because he sings so loudly that I can't read, and certainly can't sleep when he's performing.

I often imagine that it's a kitty opera. Sort of a "Barber of Meowville" if you get my drift. Figaro, figarrrrrro.

Hmm, probably not, although we've had some feisty alpha ratties that would at least try to give as good as they got. Still, they are more likely to be caught in this pose...

...than with teeth bared.

It's funny, both my wife and I were definitely dog people before getting involved in small animal rescue... now, we've gone to the rats for sure!

I have a good Airedale Terrier friend who also has rats. She's actually got her Airedale and the rats getting along fine, not that she'd trust them alone. Actually, I think she takes the rats to school with her, where, naturally, they're quite the hit with the kids (who haven't been "matured" with conditioned responses yet).

I've another good Airedale friend with both parrots and chooks...but that's another story.

Oh, and, my initial point with this post, nearly forgotten in my rambling - your rats...beautiful!

Cheers,
Marc

When we got back the cat was cowed and would run if the rabbit took one step (hop) toward her. According to the pet sitter, in the days that followed the cat became a very lovable "indoor" cat.

Louise was with us for thirteen years.

PS: She was my wife's rabbit and would "protect" her, even from me.

I am in the "both" category. I grew up with dogs and cats, and I played with both pets equally. I have a dog and a cat right now. For about 15 years I was without a dog until I bought my first home and then I got a German Shepherd. After owning a dog again for 7 years now, I think I might be drifting more to the dog-side. My husband rolls his eyes whenever we plan a trip because my first consideration is always will the dog be accompanying us or going to the kennel. I take great pains to find vacation rentals that welcome 85 pound quadripeds that shed. I've taken my dog on 2 vacations now and really, really liked having her along.

Now, I do love the independence of my cat. He doesn't even have a cat box. He goes outside. He's elusive. No one ever sees him except the immediate family. He's bossy. He prefers me over my husband. (This pleases me greatly since our previous cat preferred my husband over me. I was just the chow-wench). My current cat, however, is not a fan of my tendency to reproduce in recent years. He's also black, and my husband and I both call him our good luck charm.

To those of you who are cat people, I wholeheartedly acknowledge your complaints about dogs. They are filthy relentless jackals. But they are loyal and loving and my big bitch makes creepy people walk by my house on the other side of the street. The capacity of dogs to understand our language and communicate with us is very also endearing.

Take a wild guess But I'm a dog person, always have been, always will be, most likely due to the fact that I grew up having dogs around. Had to skip out on them though when it turned out that my daughter was very very allergic to anything wearing fur. But now that she has moved out, well, guess what... Hello Doggies!

And the good thing about it is that she's sort of "outgrown" her allergies as to being able to tolerate dogs, but still having problems with other furries.

The difference between cats and dogs? Dogs have owners and cats have staff.

I grew up with cats, they could hide from my father and dogs couldn't. I have both now. Love them all.

Arf! The answer is obvious, I would think!

Actually I like them both but dogs are very special to me. I'm not sure why. I was scared of them when I was a kid and it wasn't until I was a teenager that I realized they weren't all out to eat me and that almost all of them craved human attention and companionship. My wife never cared much for dogs so I was amazed and elated several years ago when she suggested we get a dog for our daughters. Now we all love our dog and can't imagine our daily lives without her. If it can be that way with cats, I'm very glad to hear it. I've just never tried.

I know I should say something else witty, but I feel like crap today and just want to get my work done and go home.
