Have you followed all of the instructions in the above messages? Did you try the attrib command? It so, what was the output?

Surely the easiest solution is simply to change your folder options so that you see Hidden/System files in Windows Explorer, is it not?

That doesn't fix the problem, it just makes it work on one computer while leaving it messed up on others and exposing a bunch of stuff that is hidden for a reason.

Precisely my point, yes. Changing file or folder attributes in Windows Explorer is an awful lot easier than using the "attrib" command.

Yes, it's easier to click on buttons, but a lot harder to explain to somebody.... click the button that looks like a blob, and on the bottom right find a button that has -- oh, wait.. are you using XP, 7, or 8? 8? Oh, sorry, not sure how it's done, but in Windows 7 it was here... you don't see it? Ah, it says this instead now... ok, yeah, click that, now look for this...
Much easier and less ambiguous (thus less likely to mess up) to say: Open your command prompt and paste this exact command: <command> I did tech support for a few years while in University, helping people with Windows 3.1, MacOS, etc, connect to the University's computers via a terminal server and later with SLIP and it was always easier to tell somebody an exact command to type than to have them search for buttons or checkboxes, etc... It was always easier to troubleshoot a modem by telling them hayes commands to type rather than trying to find obscure options in obscure menus in many different terminal emulators, such as Telix. Right click on the folder name, select the "Properties" menu item. Clear the "Hidden" and "System" checkboxes.
Sorry, but I honestly don't see where the complexity lies. |

You left out the steps for making the folder visible in the first place so that you can right click, and the process for that differs in different Windows versions. Moreover, if the person asking is new to computers and leaves them visible they're more likely to mess up their computer now that they have easy access to things that they shouldn't normally be touching.

I would think that anyone savvy enough to know how to use the command line function, would already be familiar with where to find the folder options without needing an explanation.
Generally, people who are NEW to computers will not be using cmd lines. |

On their own, no. Directed with very explicit instructions like I gave in my original posts in this thread, yes. Note that two people have reported that my instructions fixed their Kindles.

I didn't say your instructions didn't work. I was merely saying that HarryT's way was much simpler. And, btw, those two people you helped sounded fairly computer savvy to me. They would've understood the folder options method just as well as the cmd-line, if not easier.
Your comment was that people who were NEW to computers wouldn't be able to find their folder options. I was merely pointing out that those type of people (not the ones you helped) would probably not be comfortable using command lines. Generally, people NEW to computers are afraid to use cmd lines and prefer clear (fool-proof) buttons or settings. So the folder option method would be preferable. . Actually, my comment was that it is, in my experience, MUCH easier to UNAMBIGUOUSLY describe the steps via the command line. The problem with describing a GUI process is that it's much more open to interpretation and misunderstanding.

I am actually a big fan of the command line myself, I just think many people will become too afraid to try it at all if they're asked to go to the command line. Despite the fact that it is easier for them and less hassle, it lies outside their comfort zone.
Not saying everyone is like that, but my mother would freak out if I told her instructions that included the command line. Of course, it wouldn't come to that, as I'd end up doing it myself regardless. ![]() |

I think it's a good thing that computers have reached a level of maturity where people can simply switch them on and use them without having to understand how they work. When I was a kid in the 60s you couldn't really own a car without having some knowledge of how to fix it when it broke down, as it inevitably would. Car owners today rarely have to worry about breaking down.
