That's the point; I think BookCat doesn't know how to do this. He/She already stated once that a tech guy has to be called to enable Wi-Fi.

Still, I'd just have it enabled, protected by a WPA2 key. Then you can connect to it whenever you need or want to. It doesn't do anything to the network, and as long as you don't tell anyone the key (and not make it 1234), no-one else can use it.

As I said, I only use Wi-Fi for my phone and tablet, and (occasionally) for my notebook. It's only for browsing though. If I do something serious on the network, it's just too slow. All stationary computers (desktop, media center) are wired. If I need the notebook on the network for serious stuff, I connect it by cable as well.

Wi Fi might be a separate add on to the internet connection. I know when I switched to cable internet it didn't come with Wi-Fi and I had to have someone from my provider come out with the Wi-Fi add on so that I could connect my Kindle to the net via its Wi-Fi.

Katsunami--I remember BookCat stating in previous posts that she doesn't want wi-fi in her house because she's found that when it's on, it gives her a headache. But I think that she could turn it on briefly when needed and then turn it back off after she's done connecting to register/download books. The exposure to wi-fi would actually be less than going to a restaurant/friend's house/library that has wi-fi enabled.

As dordale has pointed out, I'm sensitive to wi-fi. I learned this at the previous area I lived in. It gives me very bad headaches. When I had the cable installed in my new house, the guy who did the installation disabled the wi-fi from INSIDE the router, so that it would be wired only. This means I would have to open up the router, which would probably be against the terms of my contract with the cable company.

The only mention of the tech friend was to do with going over to his house (he lives round the corner) and 'borrowing' his wi-fi to register, not for downloading books. The books are sideloaded.

I DON'T WANT WI-FI due to being oversensitive to it. For the same reason, I have my moby off most of the time, just switching it on occasionally to check for texts. All my friends phone my landline.

Thanks for all the info.

In the early days of wi-fi, before I had my own internet connection, I used to pinch the students' unsecured wi-fi and got headaches from it. When I got my own connection installed I learned about 'home plugs' which transfer the internet round the house via the electrical sockets (Devolo and Netgear make them). When I moved, I insisted that the installation guy switched the wi-fi off on the router.

It wouldn't cost me any more to have the wi-fi switched on; except the cost of a visit from Virgin, but I don't want to have this done.

I don't want to keep popping over to a friend's house to nick their wi-fi each time I add a book to a collection. Sure way to lose a friend!
I hope this isn't going to be a major issue. Can I create the collections using Calibre and put them onto the reader?
This may be the post which is confusing Katsunami.

My apologies, I seem to have forgotten that post.

While the Kindle PW2 does work without Wifi, it does nag when changing collections. That's about it.

Starting to really like my PW2. I have it in aeroplane mode all the time and load books just as I did for the 505. Impressed by how it handles txt too. The collections option is greyed out at the moment, but I expect this is because it's not yet registered at my end even though Amazon say it is at theirs.
Thanks everyone.

P.S. I'm female.

As soon as you connect your Kindle to a Wi-fi hotspot once and log into your Amazon account with it, it'll download the registration information and the collections will work.

Thanks BG. I'm glad I bought it, though after my purchase I received an email from Amazon saying that it's now available for £89 with a coupon code, which they sent, but by that time I had the pw!

Just letting others know.

Happy with the gender I was born with. I just added the information as you seemed unsure whether to call me he or she.

This is biologically impossible. The human body has nothing that can detect radio-frequency electromagnetic radiation.

It has all sorts of wonderful autosuggestion systems in place though In other words, if you think you're getting a headache from a wi-fi, you'll get it

Strange thing is that if I have my moby on I know a call is going to come through before it rings! I can sense it.

When I was pinching the students' wi-fi it wasn't advantageous to me to get a headache, but it always started about 30mins into surfing. Maybe it's psychosomatic, but whatever it is it has a real effect.

If I'm at the computer, an incoming call is announced about 15 seconds ahead, through crackle in the speakers.

Yes, indeed. But your computer IS equipped to detect radio-frequency signals, unlike you .
