What I have noticed is that some books that were exclusive's at Amazon or were at Amazon first tend to come out as Mobipocket only. Again another hit for Amazon.

What I think is great about Oprah doing a show and endorsing the Kindle is that she has such a large audience that many, many people who have never heard of an ebook or an ebook reader now are aware that such a thing exists. I travel quite a bit in my line of work, and whenever I pull one of my ebook readers out, people are always interested because they have never seen such a thing. I believe that the exposure is great not only for the Kindle but also for other ereaders ultimately.

WOW spelled backwards is WOW. And WOW upside down is MOM. And MOM upside down is Dad's favorite thing.

Well, maybe things are different where ever it is that you live, but in my neck of the woods the economy really sucks in a major way. I can't see "many" of the Kindle purchases being for "children" who aren't interested.

Maybe it's just because I don't have children, but I can't see spending close to $300 for a device for reading on a child. Especially for a child who isn't interested in reading. I'd be as likely to do that as I would to buy Kindles for my cats.

I would hazard a guess that there will be a number of people who will buy whatever their personal idol touts just because that person said it was the latest and greatest. These are the same people who probably ran out and bought iPods ... not because they ever listen to music ... but because you just HAVE to have one to be "cool." And then, when the next generation of iPod comes out, they HAVE to get one of those ... and on and on it goes. And, those folks have six or seven iPods sitting on a shelf somewhere that they pretty much never use.

And, while we're talking about Oprah, I'm pretty sure there are a number of people who purchase to books on her hot list, and never read the damn things. They just buy them so they can say they bought them.

Having viewed the video (that someone was kind enough to link to in another thread), I'm a little disappointed that no one mentioned the single thing that still blows my mind ... which is the fact that I can carry around damn near an entire research library with me, and have instant access to it, even when I don't have an internet connection.

However, in the long run, people who don't like the Kindle and don't read, and just bought it because Oprah said she likes it, well, they're psychotic and probably beyond help. Anyone who doesn't like the Kindle, doesn't read, has a child who doesn't read and buys a Kindle for the child just because Oprah likes it, is psychotic and delusional, and has waaaay too much money.

That's my story, and I'm sticking with it.

I'm not sure what video you saw but Oprah very definitely talked about the Kindle's capacity. She even held up and SD Card and talked about how 1000's of books could be added over and above the 200 of the Kindle's internal memory. She talked about not having to carry 14 books on vacation. She even bragged about downloading a book on the runway before her plane took off (it must have been her private plane).

Ah well, that's different then. No, the video I saw was called "Kindle Class" and was just about the basics of how to use the Kindle. I suppose it should have occurred to me that it was not the entire segment of the show. But, for some reason, it didn't. I have never actually watched her show (or Dr. Phil, or soaps, or the "courtroom" shows, or morning talk shows), so I'm not much of a source for information about those shows.

I found the video you are talking about. That class happened during a commercial break and was not aired on the show. I'm not sure why the actual clip is not available on her website. Hopefully there will be a YouTube upload soon.

Edit: This link gives a pretty good breakdown of what she talked about in relation to the Kindle.

Don't assume by "children" I meant only children who are very young and living in the household. I'm in my 60s and my 85-year-old parents still consider me a child and often buy me holiday gifts that they think I will like and really have no use for.

And yes, the economy is in bad shape everywhere, but if you don't think parents will spend $350 on a holiday gift for their child, well . . . as you said, you don't have children.

And you would be surprised how many parents whose children aren't interested in reading will buy a reading device in hopes of stimulating that interest. There is a big niche market for that kind of product (ie, products that stimulate reading and education).

And, finally, don't forget the status factor. Many parents won't want to be viewed as not provided their children with the "best" -- isn't that what accounts for the $200 sneakers, the iPhones, and similar product sales to those younger than 16 years of age?
