@seacity - you might also want to give the Modify PI a shot with options as shown in screen shot. It more or less does what Polish does with covers, and I see no reason why it should work when Polish doesn't, but... we'll never ever know unless we try.

If it doesn't work then - ???

Is the metadata being updated - add a couple of lines to Comments, do the Polish and then can you see the updated Comments in Calibre's viewer (Click the Blue I)? And assuming its possible can you see them on your Nook

I assume that ModifyPI is a Plug in? It's worth a shot.

Thanks!

It is the Modify Epub plugin and BR didn't just recommend you try it he provided a link above to the first post description of the plugin.

But I'm betting that Polish, Modify ePub plugin and Send to device all use the exact same code to insert the cover. In the past (and possibly currently) there were situations where the three ways to insert a cover listed above did not suffice. In these cases converting to epub (even epub to epub) or editing the file was the only way to insert the cover.

It slowly drifted into my awareness field that PI probably stood for "Plug-In". It's after midnight here & I've used up my excitment units for the day. Will find & load the PI tomorrow (see I do catch on). This is really no big deal but appreciate your help. I've been using convert as a workaround so that's the fallback I guess. I wish it would also remove an inserted bookjacket. I do not know why people do that!

The prerequisite previously was if the book had the cover properly identified then Polish, Modify ePub plugin or Send to device would update the cover everytime with the one identified in the GUI. However, if the cover wasn't identified correctly in the book then a conversion was required to set the proper coding for the cover.

It sounds like the covers show up in Calibre Companion but not the B&N device library, so "something" is in the right place for a cover image. Can the original cover formatting cause problems that might be fixed by removal and recreation? My understanding is that metadata including the cover will be updated to match the Calibre database when using "Send to device", but the original file on disk is untouched unless you use one of convert, Modify ePub or Polish. Is that correct? Would simply deleting then re-adding a cover before a sync make a difference?

Probably worth asking whether the "defective" copies have been deleted from the device before a fresh sync with Calibre Companion. I seem to have to manually delete them to get the updated version onto my device (though a different device).

Safe to assume these aren't DRM-encumbered since covers show up in CC?

Modify has an option to remove book jackets - and if you set preferences options as per attachment then Conversion won't create them

Calibre Companion (CC) does not extract the cover from the book, CC always uses the cover that is showing in the calibre GUI.

Possibly but as I stated above if the cover is not properly identified then Send to device may not be able to update the cover.

Certainly worth asking. Also the app may cache covers and the cache may have to be deleted along with deleting and resending the book.

I personally don't see the appeal since I use CC to find and launch my books I don't care if the reading app shows a cover on their bookshelf.

It's never safe to assume anything. CC doesn't rely on the book to get the covers.

CC doesn't get any data from the book. CC's only use of a book is to pass its file path to the chosen reader app. CC will operate even if the book file is gone, excepting (of course) being able to read the book.

You are right. And like you, sometimes what my fingers produce has little relation to what my brain thought it was asking for.
