Today's Kobo daily deal is one of my favorite authors. The third in a series for only $1.99. I enjoyed the first and the second awaits me on my reader. However, I resisted and consequently feel empowered to withstand the next temptation.

I finally became a victim of the $4.95 1st of the Series sale at Audible. Two were authors I actually enjoy (Anne McCaffrey, Heather Graham), one was a book recommended by my sister (His Majesty's Dragon) and Titan by John Varley was the Scifi book-of-the-month in December, but my library didn't have it, so I didn't read it then. They also put Old Curiosity Shop on sale for $2.99 at Audible, so now I have all the Dickens I want.

Have my audiobook devices all set up for the next week. I'm supposed to see an eye specialist tomorrow, assuming we can plow through the snow, and the drops they use don't wear off for several DAYS, so ereading is out.

Baby step, baby step, and yet....

Yesterday, one of the Kindle Daily Deals was an account by Alistair Cooke of the American Home Front in the early days of WWII. I like that kind of thing and I've always enjoyed anything I've read by Cooke. It was only $1.99 and ordinarily would have been a reflex buy. But on reflection, I acknowledged that it wouldn't add anything to my knowledge of the subject and that I already have unread WWII books on my TBR, so I passed.

Fingers crossed it becomes a habit. I hope to make it through the rest of February unscathed; I haven't bought anything in a week, when I made a proactive purchase with the 50% review coupon at Kobo. My gut says that big coupons are going to become rarer there. I've got a few pricey books on my want list that I'd get with a 65% or better coupon from the current contest, but I don't expect to score one.

We are entering 'dead time' where the specials and coupons drop off, to pick up again around May or June. So, unless you are actually ready to read the book, RESIST! Wait for a good coupon, at least 45% off. Read down your TBR. I'll be listing my current coupons on the Kobo code thread for others, but 25% is about the best I've seen.

25% is nice if you're already going to buy a book, but it is not enough to go into a buying frenzy over. I think I've still got one 50% coupon left, but I'm resisting using it. I really, really, really don't need to buy anything right now. Really.

Buy a huge 6 or 10 book omnibus...

Well, I used the first of my 50% coupon on a 4 book omnibus already, and I'm NOT GOING TO BUY ANY BOOKS RIGHT NOW.

I'm trying really, really hard to keep to that. It's especially a problem because I'm reading less right now (work overload). So buying new books is not helpful.

The next in the No. 1 Ladies' Detecive Agency series has just come out in paperback and so the ebook has dropped in price. I'm not buying it because I haven't got around to reading the previous one yet.

But this does mean that I'm not going to buy any book that appeals to me less than that one - quite a high bar!

I might make it to the end of February after all.

OTOH, my two subscriptions for February (Analog and Asimov's) have just come in. But I had accounted for them already.

My 35 issues of Lightspeed magazine from their kickstarter haven't come in yet. If they don't arrive until March I'm going to have to re-arrange my accounting again.

Unfortunately this means i might be buying it, for my mother. This is one of the few series she's addicted to. At least I have a few coupon codes to take the sting off. And hopefully the will power not to go crazy with the first click in a while {fingers crossed}

I just found out that some SF books I enjoyed and had been thinking about lately are available as fairly inexpensive ebooks - $4.39 each at Kobo, or $3.03 each at Diesel. I also found out that there are more of them than I was aware of, seven in all, and I'm not sure just where I left off.

So far, I've been using the prospect of promo codes to avoid purchasing them at Diesel, and the Diesel pricing to stave off the Kobo purchase. In short, until I can get 'em at Kobo for less than Diesel's prices, I'm not going to bother.

I have just started using a new technique that has so far helped me to not buy more ebooks. Whenever I get the urge to click that buy button, I make myself open up calibre instead and work on curating my giant library. There are still a lot of books in calibre that require tagging, weeding or other cataloging. I also have a "Read" column and a "Free" column in my main library view. Seeing how many books I've paid for and not read yet is a sobering reminder that maybe I might not need whatever book I'm thinking about buying right then.

I'm crossing my fingers that this will continue to work longer term. So far, so good!
