They will. In fact all the collections from any Kindles owned in the past will transfer to PW2 without asking

Thank you, dordale and dsmid - though it would seem this was a bad thing for you, dsmid, it will be a good thing for me - I don't want to have to set up all of my collections again.

You will have to delete dozens of duplicate collections, though, in all probability.

While the cloud collections are more likely to cause you woes than work perfectly for you, on the plus side, you can sync non-Amazon bought ebooks if you email them to your Kindle, as by doing that you upload them to your cloud storage.

Why would there be duplicate collections?

Thank you for that info. I don't really see a need to sync, since I only read my eBooks on my Kindle; I suppose I consider the cloud as more of a useful/easy way of backing up the Kindle, since Amazon keeps a copy of each book I have (except for the non-Amazon stuff) on their servers. I am assuming - there's that bad word, lol - from your statement that emailing the non-Amazon material to my Kindle will "force" Amazon to keep a copy of them on their servers, or am I confusing syncing with backing up?

I seem to recall there are 2 nags or 3 per book, in my case that would be the "Hey you, get off of my cloud" nag for non-Amazonians. So if you add 20 book to a collection, well ... do the math. It just gets soo tedious. And, I wonder, should I ever need to factory reset my PW2 (I had to with its earlier incarnation), do I need to do it all a-g-a-i-n as its not in the cloud?

There will be duplicate collections (according to the reports, I don't have one) if you have ever deleted and recreated a collection. Every collection you ever had, even if they have the same name, even if you deleted them years ago, will come back.

There will be one nag for all books, saying WiFi is off, please connect to sync, plus an additional nag afterward if the book isn't registered with Amazon, saying it cannot be synced.

1 nag for Amazon books, including cloudloaded(=downloaded & transferred via USB).

2 nags for sideloaded personal documents.

Except for the fact that Amazon is no doubt even more intrusive (Cloud control and all, lol) than they were in the days of the Kindle 3, I don't really see any, but are there any serious downsides to going from the Kindle 3 to the newest version of the Paperwhite?

Holly
I got the latest Paperwhite for Christmas which replaced my Kindle 3. I love it. Having a built in light is terrific. The only downside is a slightly reduced battery life.

Re collections:
It would of course be very comfortable if one could employ a plugboard on Calibre which in the process of transfering files to your PW woudl switch

title to "Author: title" and
author to "tag",
i.e.
"Perelman: Smitten Kitchen"
"cookbook"

If then you sort your content by author you will have all novels, philosophy, cookbooks or whatever it is you tag in a row. The fact that you might have 32 pages to flip in your author (=tag) sorted list is no problem. You can very comfortably go to say "c" (for the cookbooks) by tapping on the pagenumber in the lower right corner, entering "c" and go. If you had collections, you would 1st have to change to the collections view and then tap "cookbook".

I don't use the feature myself but yes, that's pretty much how it'll work. If you email it to your Kindle, it'll appear in your Amazon cloud storage (you are not really forcing anything, emailing your books/documents to your Kindle is a feature Amazon provide).

You are storing it there as a back-up I suppose, but you would have to connect and sync with the Amazon server to download the book onto your Kindle to read it. And it's probably really only worthwhile doing this with your non-Amazon books if you want to sync your books between different devices (so that you can read the same book on different devices). If you just want to use it as a back-up, you'd be better using Calibre and either keeping your books backed-up on your computer or cloud storage like dropbox. That's what I do, and then the Amazon cloud storage is just an additional, automatic back-up of my Amazon books.
