On my wish list, but currently far too expensive. I can wait for the paperback to come out and the price to drop. Ands who knows - perhaps a kobo coupon.

I'm with you on this one, Paul. Price will have to come down quite a bit. I've actually been thinking of reading the Safehold series as Audible books, since I currently have a surfeit of credits. I figure by the time I get to the latest one, the price will be down to reasonable. They're BIG books, if I remember correctly. Been several years since I read any of them, so I'll have to go back and reread at least a couple to get back into them. Might as well do them as listens.

Phryne Fisher & Outback

On to something I know I'll enjoy -- Dead Man's Chest, by Kerry Greenwood. This is number 18 of the Phryne Fisher series, and it's already starting out well. What a joy to come back to something really well written.
Loved it. Definitely a good one in this exemplary series. I love that we're seeing more than just Phryne, here. So much of these stories are about the other characters, and in this one Ruth and Jane play bigger roles. And now there's Tinker. So this one gets 5 stars on my list, and I think I'll stick with Australia and read Outback, by Aaron Fletcher next.

Since I used to buy them as Hardbacks, they are cheaper as ebooks. See, I can justify buying it since I am saving money.

I finished Getting Off: A Novel of Sex and Violence by Lawrence Block. I wouldn't say it was well written, but it was quite entertaining to say the least. Woman has sex with a man, then kills the man, rinse and repeat, repeat, repeat. With a few twists.

Now, I''m reading Vortex by Robert Charles Wilson, to finish his Spin trilogy.

The new one's 847 pages (as Calibre figures it). Imagine being the narrator of one of these books and having to deal with those names! They should be paid double.

The names are easy. He just spells them differently. Wahltayr is Walter. Myndiaz is Mendez. Zhermain is Sherman. Tyrnyr is Turner. Graisyn is Grayson and so on.

Yes. I've been tempted to do a global search and replace on the silly names.

This Safehold series looks interesting. Given that every book after the first takes its name from a familiar hymn, is it written as Christian allegory after the manner of C.S. Lewis?

No, the running plot is something the post-Luther wars of religion between a world-dominating theocracy whose central doctrine is to keep civilization at a pre-industrial level, and a heretical modernizing maritime kingdom (like 1600's England or Holland, aided by an android), with the possibility of genocidal aliens lurking in the background

I did recognise all the stories, but the Lord Darcy stories are excellent magical mysteries. Well worth a re-read.

Next: Since I found I had it (a freebie from a few years back), the February MobileRead Book Club selection, Outlander by Diana Gabaldon.
