Ok, here is something different I found....

Free Six of One by JoAnn Spears

Quote:
“Six of One” is the ultimate ‘girls’ night in’…with the six wives of Henry VIII. It’s the most fun you can have with your nightdress on! Join Dolly, the Tudor-obsessed heroine of “Six of One”, on a Yellow Brick Road journey to the alternate reality of an all-girl Tudor court.

It all begins when Dolly loses consciousness on the eve of her marriage to the six-times- divorced Harry. She awakens in the company of the Tudor women she’s studied all her life. They have a mission to accomplish, and Dolly may be just the girl who can help them do it.

As a warm-up to her life-changing interview with the six wives of Henry VIII, Dolly gets to dish with lots of the other fascinating females of the Tudor era. She learns things she never guessed about the Princes in the Tower from their sister, Elizabeth of York…Henry VIII’s mom. She talks sex with Henry’s sisters and scholarship with his daughters. She even gossips with the help, since Kat Ashley and Bess of Hardwicke are among the ladies on hand.

Of course the heart of the story is in Dolly’s interview with the six wives of Henry VIII. It turns out there’s something to each of the wives’ stories that’s been held back all this time. You won’t believe what really happened…or will you?

“Six of One” offers no tragedy, no excuses, and no apologies. It does have lots of broad humor, not to mention tons of puns. And—for a change—a happy ending.

"The novel is an enthusiastic, well-researched, fictional account of what happened to the infamous wives of Henry VIII." Kirkus Indie Review

So I was talking to a friend and of course romance books came up in the conversation and we got to talking about our youth and the books we read and why we started reading romance so that got me thinking.

What was the first Adult Romance book you read?

Mine was Hawk of Venice by Sally Wentworth. My sister had been rushed to the ER which happened alot in those days and someone just left the book there in the waiting room so I read it. I still vividly remember that book even though I've read hundreds since. I believe I was 13 at the time. It wouldn't be till I was 19 that I would get my hands on more Adult Romance books this one was The Other Amanda by Lynn Leslie and The Wallflower by Jan Reed both Harlequin Super Romances and oh boy I think I blushed reading both the books all the way through!

The Wolf and the Dove by Kathleen Woodiwiss, my mom left it laying around. Keep meaning to reread it.

I really started with teen romance in the 80s and I read everything in my small town's library. The earliest adult romance I remember is Shanna by Kathleen Woodiwiss. I read lots of nurse romances as well.

I have that on my next to read after I finish the next Velvet book.
My mom has never read a romance book. It's so sad it could have helped her in her 3 marriages and other romantic relationships.

That was waayy too long ago. I'm pretty sure it was a Harlequin because my mom always had a stash of those hidden in the closet and i remember sneaking in and snatching one or two. She never read anything racy, so they couldn't have been very physical, but I remember blushing and being embarrassed: and then sneaking another one. LOL

I remember alternating between those and Trixie Belden books from my own shelf. (think Nancy Drew/Hardy Boys, same age bracket)

_These Old Shades_ by Georgette Heyer. In retrospect, I probably started with the best...it had *everything*--swashbuckling, cross-dressing,
Spoiler:
babies switched at birth,
a dastardly French nobleman, an English Duke with a vaguely demonic nickname...

Come to think of it, about the same time as I read that, Victoria Holt's _Mask of the Enchantress_ had been published "condensed" in Good Housekeeping magazine (I just googled this--it was the Aug. 1980 issue), and I found my mother's copy (probably months/years after Aug. 1980) and gulped it down like an ice cold slurpee in July. I don't know whether I read that or the Heyer first, but I know the Heyer was the first romance I read as a separately bound book.

I think These Old Shades was the first romance I read also. The second one though was the infamous bodice ripper, Sweet Savage Love, by Rosemary Rogers. Just a bit of contrast between those two. I spent most of my teen years alternating sweet Regencies and rip-roaring bodice rippers, until I discovered JRR Tolkien, as well as hard SciFi, and went totally off romances for quite a few years.

One of the Wild Rose freebies is Naked Hope by Rebecca E. Grant. I remember reading another book of hers a few years ago, a cowboy romance called Liberty Starr. It was quite good. Definitely one-clicking on this one.

the first romance novel i read was georgette heyer's frederica. i wouldn't have bought it on my own, as i was hugely into fantasy, but i was 16 and sick with the flu, and it was one of the books my dad brought home to keep me company. after frederica, i was hooked! these old shades, btw, one of my very favorites to this day.

Quote:
Ever,

These letters are often all that get me through week to week. Even if it’s just random stuff, nothing important, they’re important to me. Gramps is great, and I love working on the ranch. But…I’m lonely. I feel disconnected, like I’m no one, like I don’t belong anywhere. Like I’m just here until something else happens. I don’t even know what I want with my future. But your letters, they make me feel connected to something, to someone. I had a crush on you, when we first met. I thought you were beautiful. So beautiful. It was hard to think of anything else. Then camp ended and we never got together, and now all I have of you is these letters. S**t. I just told you I have a crush on you. HAD. Had a crush. Not sure what is anymore. A letter-crush? A literary love? That’s stupid. Sorry. I just have this rule with myself that I never throw away what I write and I always send it, so hopefully this doesn’t weird you out too much. I had a dream about you too. Same kind of thing. Us, in the darkness, together. Just us. And it was like you said, a memory turned into a dream, but a memory of something that’s never happened, but in the dream it felt so real, and it was more, I don’t even know, more RIGHT than anything I’ve ever felt, in life or in dreams. I wonder what it means that we both had the same dream about each other. Maybe nothing, maybe everything. You tell me.

Cade
~ ~ ~ ~

Cade,

We’re pen pals. Maybe that’s all we’ll ever be. I don’t know. If we met IRL (in real life, in case you’re not familiar with the term) what would happen? And just FYI, the term you used, a literary love? It was beautiful. So beautiful. That term means something, between us now. We are literary loves. Lovers? I do love you, in some strange way. Knowing about you, in these letters, knowing your hurt and your joys, it means something so important to me, that I just can’t describe. I need your art, and your letters, and your literary love. If we never have anything else between us, I need this. I do. Maybe this letter will only complicate things, but like you I have a rule that I never erase or throw away what I’ve written and I always send it, no matter what I write in the letter.

Your literary love,

Ever

I don't remember my first. Maybe Johanna Lindsey. Could have been Laurie McBain or Kathleen Woodiwiss. Those are all among my firsts.
