Polyester stand mat effect in screen

The upper 2 - 3 cm region of the screen of my Aura has a rather annoying polyester strand mat pattern inside the top layer of the screen.
These are not scratch marks, the reader is brand new, it is really is under the surface.
The effect is only visible under certain angles (a relation between your head, the kobo and the light source), and is not visible if I turn on the backlight.
I tried taking a picture of it, which is a real PITA, but best effort so far is in attachment.

I cannot reproduce the effect in the lower 3/4 of the screen, so I am starting to think this is some kind of production defect in the upper area of my screen. At first i thought maybe it has something to do with the touch capability of the screen, but it looks too chaotic to be a matrix of some sort. Maybe some kind of stretch marks ?

Does anyone else see this ? Any insights ?

Edit: argh typo: stRand

It's like this on every Aura. It's probably part of the light dispersion layer.

It's NOT like this on every Aura; mine, acquired in November 2013, has no such marks (and yes, I HAVE seen them on older units so I DO know what they look like; mine is pristine).

The only thing I see looks like a poorly applied screen protector effect. Perhaps one of the layers is not fully in contact with the layer below?

Nothing like it on my AuraHD.

Luck;

There are threads on this issue, but I don't recall anyone having this issue with an Aura HD - only on some Aura units.

Dr. Drib is correct: this has only been reported on Aura units, not Aura HD units. I have both, and both have flawless screens (no bright pinpricks, no striations on the upper third of the screen). But I've seen several Auras (non-HD) that have the striations, and I've seen the pinpricks on Aura (non-HD) and on Glo units.

Thanks for the feedback.

Interesting hypothesis. I tried pushing the top layer but that does not seem to have any effect (of course if the problem is located in a layer which my pressure does not reach it proves nothing).

See "Kobo Aura’s Screen Has Visible Pattern..." at http://blog.the-ebook-reader.com/201...-than-aura-hd/ for a blog on this issue

Actually, I didn't notice that it was that visible with the light on. Mine only has visible striations when there is lighting is in an awkward angle. The price label on mine said "12 2013" so I'm assuming that it's a fairly recent model.

Does your price label indicate any dates?

I bought mine in January, and I noticed this effect (which I'd read about in this forum) for the first time yesterday with the sun hitting the angled surface directly through a bus window. It is quite faint, and didn't disturb reading for me.

Hi,

I'd like to weigh in with a bit of an investigation.

I just went over my aura with a jewelry loupe that has LEDs arranged in a ring around the lens. Anything shiny thus get multiple highlights due to the points of the LEDs.

On a blank page with no backlight I could see this effect as I rotated to lens( and thus the light) around. On my unit the effect is very subtle unlike the pic, though admittedly I havent looked closely in direct sunlight.

However I only see this at the top, near the bottom I don't.

Based on this I put forward the theory this might actually be an artifact of the backlight not the cap screen. It may be that the gradient in the 'shiny' polystyrene effect is to distribute the light.

Can someone with a Glo give it the going over with high mag lens with the ring light I described? Even better if you can take some pics and tell use how you did it......had a go but no good result.
